I agree, i cant stand ibanez rg stuff or any of that crap, but i have an ibanez Hollowbody AS73, and for 500 bucks it is a steal. sounds great and plays wonderfully.

I just bought my first guitar...The Gibson Les Paul
And I have no idea how to set it up and the amplifier to play lets say...disturbed music....

Not by much. Your use of that as a point of contention probably comes from bandwagoning.
Basswood also comes in high and low end varieties, depending on specific genus and how it's procured.
