don't get me wrong, i love shredding as much as, if not more than, the next guy, but there is a time and place for it. i've seen plenty of guitarists ruin the song with a terrible shred solo where one doesn't really belong. and if you can't solo well slowly and with feeling, you can't shred without sounding like you're just running through mindless scale exercises.

+1

There's nothing wrong with playing fast. If the guitarist just can play great melodies with fast speed it sounds great. I mean that the melody is the main thing. Slow solos can be more difficult to play. Mindless shredding will ruin a song (OK, maybe not "Angel of Death" like songs where you have to shred).

I love this! When i hear people playing these insanely fast songs, I feel like crap cause I work my ass off on these "slow" songs that I love and want to play. I ALWAYS play based on feel, although i do feel good playing somethin fast...sort of

Yeah I pretty much can't stand hearing people play at guitar center. What's worse is when I'm playing there (haha one of the people playing), people try to play over top of me or harmonize with me but suck. They have terrible tone, technique, and end up going back to their Metallica songs...Good on them for trying to venture out, but who doesn't know how to play MOP?

Speaking of the horrible GC players, I was there a few weeks ago and there were no less than three people constantly sweeping and shredding. I played Float On by Modest Mouse and all of the staff crowded around me to listen. Just goes to show, showing off doesn't work if you suck.

I love this group! Awesome idea whoever started this group! ^_^. I really like older music and alot of it is slower acoustice stuff. Travis picking is a very good picking pattern that can be fast or slow. It's awesome fast and really pretty slow.

Glad I found people who think like me. =)
In my school, there are a few people who play guitar, me one of them, other one is a friend of mine, and some other guys. They all play fast, and Im the only one who plays a bit like blues-old rock. And in there, its like if you play fast, you play better. And Im not saying they dont play good, but man, speed aint everything.

It's funny, every time I go into guitar center, they're always playing Metallica. I've only heard two songs; Master of Puppets and Seek and Destroy. GOD it pisses me off.

Steve Vai (one of my favorite guitarists) said one of the smartest things; "Kids today concentrate too much on speed and not on feel." So, as a result, I've dedicated myself to not be a shredder. To be versatile. I want to be ABLE to shred, but not have my music revolving on it.

This is completely true, and I agree. Shredding is an ability, useful, but I wouldnt like the music I play be always it. Both playing slow an

I am back! I like the change you made to the title of the group. I have gotten a bit faster, but I WILL hold onto what I know, a variety of styles makes for a MUCH BETTER listening experience! It is all the little things that make up a musician and if you rely on just a few of your skills, it just won't be as good.

what i really mean is let's discuss the stupidness of people that think being faster means you are better at guitar or sound better, or is better music because it's really fast.
Ah, well that I can understand, simply being faster by no means makes it better, but it's not worse either, they can both be great when used properly.

Yeah, true.

That's even more of a stereotype! Listen to rainforest by MAB, not all fast, and loads of feeling. Who the hell are all of you to decide what has feeling anyway? How an you know what the artist was feeling that moment, and how to interpret it? You can't. And also, if you advocate slow music with feeling, surely you understand that music is an expression of you, and that it is pure and it can't be judged. Music is. If you don't personally like it, that's fine, but it is all amazing, because it's music. You people just don't seem to get that.

Sorry dude, i see what your getting at.
I guess i fail.

This statement is full of ignorance.
Correction:
"although playing fast with no feel is meaningless and pointless."

firstly, meaningless and pointless mean the same thing bud.
And yours is ignorant as well, speed is used in classical to show emotion of anger. It isn't just shred that is fast, this group is not speed is bad, it's lets hate on shred.

It's lets hate on shred that has no feeling

Wait, so you're saying that playing OMG AWESOME SHREAD METAL 12TH FRET + RIFFS just maybe AREN'T as great as people make them out to be? And that flying around on the neck hammering on notes super-fast may not prove your super-awesome guitar skills? Whoa, hold on, the room is spinning, I am in a SHOCK...

Yeah, I hate all the metal-heads thinking that since they can play solo to the Master of Puppets song that they're really good. I've seen TONS of people state they can play it perfectly, if that many people claim that then it's probably not hard huh?

True.
Though speed IS a bi-product of practice. I think everyone would like to be able
to play fast. It is nice to be able to SHOW off your skills, especially to the non-musicians. If speed is done well it can be an amazing expression. Done wrong though it is void of feeling, may as well be a computer program playing. It
is much harder to play slow with no F/X than fast with many F/X.
It is a personal preference though. I like a blend of FAST and SLOW myself.
variety IS the S P I C E of life. OF COURSE I WOULD LOVE TO burn up
my guitar with blazing speed but I can't, YET. When I can, will I do it all
the time? I hope not. LoL

true, but i believe that speed should be used in solos only(but not in every solo....Metallica, im looking at you!) like if your making an acoustic song it doesnt need to be fast.

Why did you change the name? I do not agree with slower IS better. I did agree with anti faster is better because neither one is BETTER. Could you change it back?

Also, I think there are slower skills that are very hard! Finger picking, alternate pickingand many other skills. They can also be used to play fast. Please don't hate on the top UG players. They do work their a$$e$ off. Shredders don't suck in any
way, I just think no one style is "BETTER' than another.
