"God blessed him with..."

TheHeartbreaker

I've become completely sick of hearing people say "God blessed him with such talent."

It's as though no credit being given to an individual for all of their hard work to get as good as they are at something.

In particular, I was watching a video of a blind Japanese guitarist who was quite good, and someone posted, "He has been blessed by God with that talent."

Uh...no, he worked his ass off, despite his handicap (I assume that there must have been a comprise for sight and guitar skills), to become what he has.

This post isn't about the guitarist, so if you have seen the video don't be like, "He's not that good." That's not the point. There are definitely better and definitely worse, but I'd say he's good.

The point of this thread is to discuss about how this "God" character is given too much credit for the accomplishments of man.

It seems i've heard some were that "god created all men equal" so how is it possible that he blessed any one man with ecseptional talent? It seems i've heard some were that "god created all men equal" so how is it possible that he blessed any one man with ecseptional talent?

Resiliance

Haha. I agree, but I don't really blame "God" for it though. Of course some people are more talented than others, but this is usually in entirely different fields (athletics, etc...).

Basically I think it comes down to people not wanting to acknowledge someone put a shitload of work in something and are subconsciously in denial about the fact that they didn't in the past, are too lazy to do it now, etc...

Basically, it's easier to say that someone got good at something because of something they received than they actually made happen theirself, because that'd mean you could do it too.

Let's not neglect the fact that many elements go into a person's achievement, including genetics, natural ability, a superior teacher or mentor. None of these elements (except as metaphor) is magical, mystical, supernatural, attributable to a super-being.

Often someone with natural ability is surpassed by someone who works harder.

I always say:
"Good Jimi Hendrix blessed him with his music talent..."
the only problem is that it doesn't work for jimi himself

Salute to Jaco

I have to agree with most of the posts in this thread. Rather than restate it, I'll just say that maybe people are jealous, doubting that man alone can do such wonderful things. Perhaps knowing that someone did that all alone makes them wish they could, and just say that god did it so their self esteem won't drop to low. I have to agree with most of the posts in this thread. I believe that the phrase "God etc..." has become a common idiom for saying that someone is really good at something.

i.e. "Oh god, you're so good", and "God blessed him with amazing talent."

I say alot of things like that out of habit and I've been an athiest for a good two years.

A sickening subliminal influence that Christianty has on society and most modern cultures.

Does God's involvement with something necessarily mean divine intervention and disruption of the natural order? Can men do anything apart from God? I don't beleive so.

Seeing as God created the world, he is responsible for every single thing that occurs and genetics, circumstances and the individuals personality are all given by God. Thereforeto say that something is a gift from God is not a slight on the person's effort, but rather an acknowledgement of that person's individual specialness to God.

Actually, some talent is genetic, like how I bend my thumbs back to touch my wrists. I didn't work to do that.
I think people just say that "god-given talent" crap just to let everybody know they're christian, to try to make other people believe in it, or something like that, not because they don't want to acknowledge the otherr person's work.

I think it's just a way of viewing the world. I used to be a devout christian and I would use statements like that without thinking about it because that's just what made sense to me. Of course now i'm with you TS, but I still cut people some slack for it.

It's okay to say "bless you". It gets offensive if you say "god bless you". You can bless people, "god" can't.

Yeah, there's this fundamentally Christian girl in my physics class who added me on Facebook. Next thing I know 99% of her statuses are Bible quotes. And to each one I want to reply "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" but that would make me seem like an asshole. Now that she found out I'm an atheist, whenever someone sneezes she says "God bless you!" with a heavy emphasis on the word "God." Oh God, do I want to strangle her.
