That is the definition of "atheism" in The Oxford Dictionary Of English Language.
The belief that God does not exist. This doesn't mean that being atheist means you don't think there's a possibility God/any other higher being exists. This simply means you don't believe in one.
ANY sensible human being knows that one can't be certain about the existence or disexistence of a supreme being. But there are odds. And they aren't in favour of religion.
Why do people find it so damn hard to read that definition and not add their own little "Oh damn you atheists! You're so smallminded" crap to it? It says disbelief in deities. It doesn't say disbelief in the possibility of deities.
One can in fact not believe there is a supreme being and still acknowledge the possibility there is. Understood this way, an agnostic could also be a theist or an atheist. The agnostic atheist simply finds no compelling reason to believe in God.
Get that through to your thick skulls, everybody who's too intellectually inept to understand that simple fact.

I don't like that definition. It presupposes that gods exist. A more accurate definition would be "one who does not believe that gods exist."<br />

You're wrong, actually, so I wouldn't suggest calling anyone else a jackass. An agnostic is one who believes that it is entirely impossible to know if there is a god or not. It is possible to be agnostic about things other than the existence of god. One could be agnostic about anything. |
