Here's what some other people have to say about Autons:

²Snakes is a work of fucking genius! Like loads of my favourite punk records rolled into one.² Pat Gilbert, author of Passion Is A Fashion: The Real Story of The Clash

³Snakes is a pulsing slab of electro-punk Š never off my turntable. It thumps with the insistence of disco while retaining the grittiness of Œ60s garage rock. The distinct sound of Autons Š infectious!² Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover

"This is the most adventurous C.D I have heard all dayŠ it's excellent. Autons have a very punky sound that is mixed with techno beats and the result is absolutely fantastic. Genius. 10/10" Repeat Fanzine

³Autons impress with the brilliant Snakes. Taken from their 4-track demo that Rob da Bank couldn't stop raving about. Already played on the show before hitting unsigned.² Radio 1's Unsigned

³If The White Stripes did disco they'd probably sounds something akin to
Autons. Their superb debut DIY single Snakes was a great taster for this their debut album Short Term Manifesto, and The Devil In Me is proof they've got plenty of tricks up their sleeves. David Auton's wailing vocals have a primeval quality that most other singers just can't get close too. This album is a manifesto for rock glory. 8/10² Teletext

"Hisses and writhes around vigorously like a pissed-off cobra trapped in a bag. It's a good thing that this electro-punk gem is blessed with a guitar riff to die for. A killer, and no mistake." Vanity Project

"Attitudinal disco hardcore ... Autons are fantastic, leftfield fun. Uber-rhythmic: go get." Drowned in Sound

"The three piece have developed an electrifying stage show. The guitar is now the fastest gun in the West while David Auton's elegantly wasted persona is an update of Bowie at his best." The Guide

³Intricate sci-fi synthesisers resound, and vocalist David Auton¹s petulant Lydonesque snarl is truly venomous. Like Hot Chip, Autons are an infectious band to be enjoyed over and over again.² God Is In The TV Zine

'low fi as fuck, ad glammed up to the max, the autons debut record sits in a strange place. 7/10" rock sounds

Amazon.co.uk on Short term manifesto

sparkle, southsea
"I am a great lover of electro music, indie and punk, and what I love about this record is that it takes the best from all of these genres to create something which is very special. 'Snakes' is a brilliant track and just deserves to be a top ten hit. It is catchy, has punky guitars, a brilliant electronic bass sound and a stylophone! No wonder Lamacq plays it on his show! But it doesn't stop there, the album also gives us the sublime 'Shine Tester, Shine Tester' which is kind of like three songs sandwiched into one, the uber cool electro of 'Ice Major', the broken music box beauty of 'Different Eyes', and the epic 'Maybe'.

I was at their Guildhall gig on 12th May and they blew the other bands out of the water! This has been a well anticipated debut for those 'in the know' about Portsmouth's best kept secret. "

" New, different, exciting, buy it!!!, 6 Jun 2007
By Blah! Party "Shaun" (Portsmouth. UK) - See all my reviews

If like me, you've seen the Autons live a couple of times, then, like me, you've been waiting impatiently for this, their debut album.
With a mix of electro, indie, punk, dance and anything else they've ever heard, Short Term Manifesto is one of the most exciting and refreshing albums I've heard in a long time!
If you're bored of the current crop of sound-a-like indie bands doing the rounds at the moment, then buy this! You'll not be disapointed. "

Me, IOW
"I bought this album yesterday, after seeing them live for the second time, and it rocks. many band have tried to mix dance with rock, and failed. The autons havn't. Tracks to look out for are the 1st single snakes, the devil in me, and ice major.
Musicly, Ray autons impressve guitar work adds the rock element to the music, while Tony on keyboard lays down the beat and sound effects, easily replacing a drummer you would expectfrom a rock band. David auton has a very distinctive voice, which copes equally well with the emotional 'words she said' and the pure dance track 'ice major'.
Buy it, and see for yourself. "

LIVE! 17th autgust, Fawcett inn

Me:
"The autons played an AMAZING set. i didnt get the times, but im guessing at around 2 hours, it was the longest to date. They played all the clssics, some new materiel and a cover. Some of the highlights, which were many, had to be snakes, the headbang nducing 'the devil in me', and after much heckling, 2 playing of ice major. Thnak you guys!

One thing i did notice was that they appeared to be having massive amounts of fun. The last two times ive seen these guys play, they kept up the creaseless cool image, but last nigt it felt so chilled.Banter, dedications (to us. and we are not dead. oh yes), and guest appearances all added to spectacular of the longest...set...ever (as the simpsons comic book guy would say it).

Shaun, Portsmouth
"The Autons then sorted themselves out and launched into their set! The crowd seemed to surge forward, but that might have been the several pints I'd got through by this point! The Autons are one of those bands that you really have to see live to get a true feeling of the energy and power their songs have. They played a set of all their well known tracks and 3 new ones that I didn't catch the names of. Without exception, every track was a slice of electro punk loveliness! I really can't remember the last time I enjoyed watching a band so much! The three of them were also obviously having a great time as well, and the atmosphere in the Fawcett Inn was brilliant!! A pub full of people drawn together and united by a great band, playing great music! The Autons played their longest set ever! I can't remember exactly how long, but it must have been a good couple of hours! (I'd be crap at writing reviews for a living!! "Some geezer came on whose name I can't remember, played some songs whose names I can't remember and he sounded a bit like that other band, whose name I can't remember!")

Richard and the rest of Isle of Wight Crew were leaping about and having a great time and weren't killed or beaten up by any body, despite what David had said!

David then did a song or two (Whose names I can't remember) with the harmonica player from Doctor Brown (Whose name I can't remember) which was brilliant!! You really wouldn't put Autons and harmonicas in the same sentence, but it was genius, and I think for me, the highlight of the evening. The Autons then finished with a second playing of the brilliant Ice Major, which sent Richard and friends in to a frenzy of pogoheadbanginghairyheadshakin' dancing, and then that was it! It was over! LIVE june 4th southsea bandstand

Shaun, portsouth
"The Autons came on, and after a bit of fiddling about with sound levels, got on with the business of playing some cracking tunes! With most of the audience being too cool to get up and dance, the dance floor in front of the band was filled with children, who as anyone with kids know, when they hear music, just have to dance! There was a bloke in a red cap getting down in a particularly 'unique' way, and some old geezer in a dress and anorak who couldn't help himself; he also just had to dance! If you were there, you'll know who I'm talking about! There was also an elderly couple, who were gently waltzing in each others arms, which was quite a touching scene. And at one point, a certain Ian Sonic cycled across the front on his Parmiters bike, cheerfully ringing his bell, followed by an Emptifishlet on a BMX. ( Autons and Emptifish really need to play together again!!) The rest of the audience sat around on the grass, drinking, having picnics and just enjoying the music, a brilliant atmosphere! Early on in the Auton's set, a bloody great aircraft carrier sailed past, on its way back to the navy base. With all her crew lined up on deck, it was a pretty impressive sight! Where else in the world would you be able to be watching a great band play live, for free, whilst the Royal Navy's finest sails past in the background? (Photo in 'my pics' ) A young kid was sitting near us with his parents, and his face had been painted like a pirate. Memories, or rather lack of them, came flooding back! Lady T and my mates reminded me that I'm no longer allowed to play pirates!!

It's hard to pigeon hole the Autons into a particular genre of music, and there's no one else who they particularly sound like, but if you can imagine Kaiser Chiefs meets Hard-Fi meets Erasure meets Gary Newman meets The Damned meets late Public Image Ltd meets Doctor Who meets The Hives meets David Bowie, then you'll be close! They don't sound like any of those, but there are elements of all of them!

I don't think the bandstand is the best place to totally appreciate The Autons, I'd really like to see them at the Wedgewood Rooms or another small, but loud venue, but I can't think of better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than lying in the sunshine listening to them!"
