Being experimental is great.. unless you don't do anything too crazy.

I take this back, as European Son and Tyler said, most experimental bands are really pretentious. And you don't need to be really weird to be avant garde, bands like Pere Ubu I would call experimental, bearing in mind they actually did do new and great things

I believe what I was trying to say is that the whole experimental thing is more and more becoming a genre for people who do unbareable music that is non-mainstream, but not experimental, original or groundbreaking at all, it just appears so because it's diffrent from what people normally listen to and it kind of itches me. Today, it seems like and experimental band is either actually somewhat listenable and original, or it's just complete shite. My 2 cents.

True. I hate some quirky shit I hear just because its trendy for indie kids and thier skinny ties.
Not that my opinion matters lol. I need to check out Mr Bungle.

Anyone like avant-garde classical music? Check out Cage, Ferneyhough, Sorabji, Finnissy, Xenakis, and Antheil for a good start.

I don't think theres any harm in being experimental for the sake of it, personally.

I hate to say it, but most "Avant-Garde" bands are complete bullshit. Most of those bands are just experimental for the sake of being it and frankly, it's really f*cking annoying. "Oh my god, we're so experimental". Don't get me wrong, I love originality in music if it comes naturally, I just hate it when bands try to be "experimental" for the sake of being "diffrent" and "underground". A lot of them are as poser-ish as any pop punk/emo or British "indie" band out there, they're just more discreet.

Then again, that's just my 2 cents.
