Forearm/finger strength

not_dead_enough

Who here agrees with me that playing bass requires somewhat more forearm and finger strength than playing guitar? I mean, the strings are thicker, the frets larger, the force required to fret a note (and not buzz) is more and quite simply it's a heavier instrument too.

It's not something you notice when you pick it up and play it the first time, but when trying to play for an hour or longer I for one find the bass to be much more demanding than the normal guitar.

Who agrees??

Definitely true. After playing bass for a while, pick up a guitar: it's like playing a toy. Definitely true. After playing bass for a while, pick up a guitar: it's like playing a toy.

i play electric bass, electric guitar n acoustic guitar, n find that they all support one another - u need to be proficient on all 3 to truly wail any 1 - endurance, dexterity, precision: vital in one to even play, priceless flourishing component to any other - n carpal tunnel syndrome is slightly different for each, cuz yer using different muscles n tendons etc - so, once ya get the basic muscle memory down, if u haven't played one for awhile, yer fingers think u still can, so it'll be sloppy - get some exercises to define certain highlights on each - like, i got this one riff on guitar that's alotta HP timing rhythm precision etc, as a kinda test to see if i'm on enough yet to do other tunes - n if i am, it takes alotta other issues outta the bass equation - jus other riffs fly out more effortlessly - n then u don hafta think about em - u can concentrate more in improv etc i play electric bass, electric guitar n acoustic guitar, n find that they all support one another - u need to be proficient on all 3 to truly wail any 1 - endurance, dexterity, precision: vital in one to even play, priceless flourishing component to any other - n carpal tunnel syndrome is slightly different for each, cuz yer using different muscles n tendons etc - so, once ya get the basic muscle memory down, if u haven't played one for awhile, yer fingers think u still can, so it'll be sloppy - get some exercises to define certain highlights on each - like, i got this one riff on guitar that's alotta HP timing rhythm precision etc, as a kinda test to see if i'm on enough yet to do other tunes - n if i am, it takes alotta other issues outta the bass equation - jus other riffs fly out more effortlessly - n then u don hafta think about em - u can concentrate more in improv etc

yeh i have similar problems cos not only is my bass of poor quality( the neck is slightly bent) meaning that the frets buz horrendously more than most basses if not stomped down and also im working with a fender frontman 15 i think (aguitar amp!) meaning to get any sound out of the lower notes i have to play extraordinarily hard.....mainly forearm for lower notes a combination for the rest... yeh i have similar problems cos not only is my bass of poor quality( the neck is slightly bent) meaning that the frets buz horrendously more than most basses if not stomped down and also im working with a fender frontman 15 i think (aguitar amp!) meaning to get any sound out of the lower notes i have to play extraordinarily hard.....mainly forearm for lower notes a combination for the rest...
