The only way to play bass . Haha. Well, ok it's not about how many strings you play, but how you play the strings.
But I personally prefer 5-string basses. They don't only look cool, but also gives you very low tones. If only I had money to buy one... ( and not just a Harley Benton which costs less than the strings you usually use)

It's really a question of the song, I mean, if I NEED those lower tones, I'd rather use a 5 than have an incredibly floppy E string. But if I won't use them, I'd prefer the skinnier neck. But I suppose it's all preference. I personally prefer to use a 4 string and have another bass with the low strings of a 5 set (B, E, A, D) on it . I like the skinnier neck as opposed to a think 5 string neck. But, once again, it's all preference. I will never say that a 5 string is not a real bass, same for a 6,7, o even 12 string bass. It's what ever the musician needs.

I have a 5-string, and I measured, with a same width neck as my 4, its a Peavey Millennium, and I love being able to use the low string for not only low notes, but to be able to do things, that on a 4, would be extremely hard, or otherwise impossible. I also liek 6-strings for te same reason, but I find that when I play one, I very rarely use the high C.
