Dublin, June 2004
The RDS Stadium was extra-full of people. Fans from all over Ireland had come to see Metallica live. I myself had come from the city of Cork, situated at about 250 km from the Irish capital. The band was playing for over an hour and a half now, but neither them nor the crows seemed tired. The first notes of the song were played, and everyone clapped in enthusiasm - "Nothing Else Matters". I kept thinking to myself - imagine the feeling you must have when the crowd sings with you, and recognizes the song after the first notes or riff. That was the life... The song came to an end, and the band quickly switched to "Master of Puppets". If the previous song had been sang mostly by the crowd, this one was lived, felt, too. "Master! Master" was being chanted by everyone. It was hypnotizing, pure and simple. I had always wanted to be in a band, to play for the people and express my feelings and thoughts. When the performance ended (after playing "Whiskey in a Jar" specially for us), I left for the train station and, quite tired, but excited, I went to my home, in Cork. I lived near the County Hall, the tallest building in my country. I threw myself onto the bed and kept thinking about the concert. I was playing guitar myself, various genres, my favourite songs. Those first songs haunt me to this day. I was playing and singing at my school, in front of my classmates and friends. They were always more than excited to hear me. I was a good athlete, too. The only thing I enjoyed more than running was playing my guitar. I lived with my mother, father and grandma. They were all approving my hobby and encouraging me. The first time something different happened was at a school festival - I was playing my guitar while a mate from the school choir was singing. The feeling of co-operation was wonderful. I did not know at the time that my true band was waiting for me somewhere... ----------------- ----------------- -- The next chapter will appear the next week here. Stay tuned!
