I read something one time that said Metal and Wagner were related.

How is this?

I think 19th century should have been split "Early Romanticism" (Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelessohn) and "Late Romanticism" (Wagner, Tchaicovsky, Grieg). Just a thought. Either way, nice list and great group.

Quick question: I can't seem to find Johann Pachelbel on that list of composers up there^
Is he supposed to be there? :/

That's a great piece/part, man! (the Vaughan-Williams)

Sure, I'd be happy to suggest some stuff! Lowell Liebermann (by far my favorite American composer), Eric Ewazen (2nd favorite), definitely Ticheli and Whitacre, Samuel Adler, Samuel Barber, Milton Babbitt, and Jason Druckman. Just to get ya started. :D

Can anybody suggest some good American composers? I would have to say that Aaron Copland is my favorite composer, and I also like Frank Ticheli and some Eric Whitacre. There has to be a bunch of American composers that I'm missing out on...

Some of my favorite classical songs are... Folk Song Suite by R. Vaughan Williams (I played the solo trumpet part in band), Minuet in G by JS Bach, Outdoor Adventure by Aaron Copland, and Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel. I like to listen to music with trumpets, for the most part. I really like Copland's use of trumpets, and distinct American sound.

Are troubadors considered classical?
I love their music...

If not I would have to go with Liszt, Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Shostakovich, Bach, Debussy, Fabini (lol nationalism), and some more...

Well, Frenchy obviously doesn't like the idea of a classical sub-forum. It ain't happening.

Random Trivia Fact: The guy who invented (or the main inventor) of the CD withheld it until it could fit the whole of Beethovens 5th (i think it was that, or another long piece 54mins...?). Obviously he was a Beethoven Fan

That's right, Ben. Also, his augmented ensembles, powerful dynamics and contrast, and longer pieces contributed to the transition as well. That's why his late works are considered Romantic.

BFun wrote on Mar 17th, 2008 12:49pm

Well, Beethoven is credited to be the link between classical and romantic genres, which accounts for his sad/sorrowful songs.

Good guess! It's actually from the piece of the same name by the progressive metal band Adagio.

Btw, Sanctus Ignis, is your name in reference to the piece "Sanctus" by Palestrina? :p

Hey guys. Classical music ftw. I had a 2 hour lecture on Beethoven today in my Western Music class. It was pretty awsome. We listened to sonata Pathetique, and... 5th symphony. I've never been into Beethoven because I didn't think he'd have sorrowful and sad stuff. And isnt that what classical music is all about :p:. But I was wrong lol. So yeah, he's on my list now... Yeah.

Same here, Ben...same here. :p: I'd like to play his Totentanz "concerto" even more though...
