That dream was short lived, I don't think I'm going to duel major, but I'll try to minor in composition if the offer an associates.

Hey everybody, Im glad I found this group hahah. Im very new to this stuff so any good tips for someone new to composing or songwriting? I like alot of different music but my favorite would probably be jam music (ie. Grateful Dead) so is there anything I should know when writing those types of songs?

I composed a melody and harmonized it in four-part voicing in the style of a Bach chorale for my music theory class. Then I wanted to hear it, so I put it into FL Studio. If anybody would care to give me some advice on it, I wouldn't mind. It's titled "Music Theory Assignment" or something of the sort.

Yargh, I "composed" a short Bass, guitar duo, but it turned out impossible to play the way I wanted to, so in a fit of rage I deleted the file, and now I miss it so very much.

Hey, I fitted the criteria, so I joined.
I'll be getting a mic in the near future so I you should start hearing some music from me a bit.
I hope to get a few more freinds from joining this group as I've only got 6!!!

So I have a song I have been writing for a while now. It's one of my orchestra pieces that I'm developing and I'm stuck with writers block. It has a melody, a bass line that comps it, and a beat. Problem is, I was never good at drums or tympani or anything like that. Also I don't know where to go with it from here. If you think you can help me out with it the mp3 is on my page and is called Il Viaggiatore.

Hmm. Minor 2nds eh. Sounds risky :p:, thats my problem. I'm afraid of stuff like that in melody. I don't have a problem with dissonant and unusual chords however. I still don't get how people can make a song sound so sorrowful even with the predictable tonic-subdominant-dominant progression. I might even make a second guitar part for it. I want it to be a great piece. I know that's saying a lot :p:, but I guess I'll just keep at it. I already have enough written to keep me motivated so yeah.. Thanks for your help, I'll post back with any questions.

If you wanna go for sad/dark/etc., use a lot of chromaticism and intervals like minor 2nds. Make sure to not let the piece get "stuck" in one key for a while, use your progressions! Listen to some Liszt, Chopin, and Scriabin for examples on how pieces "move" places.

In the process of writing a Classical guitar peice in D minor. I got a "theme" if I can call it that. I wanna make it as sad as possible. Any tips you'd like to share? Certain intervals that work well. I'm doing a bit of harmonization in 3rds for one part, and planning to change keys to Cm for about 5 bars, then back to D minor. Also, I want it to be in ternary form. : peace : Tips? Suggestions?

Started a Minor Waltz a few days ago, The Last Waltz, really helping express some emotions with what all's going on in my crappy love life.

I think the most important thing for people to do when starting to compose is to listen to and play classical music. You'll get acquainted with the form and "language" so to speak, of composition.

I don't compose but i'm hoping to start, just not really got any clue as to where to begin

Sounds neat! Make sure to use some chromaticism to make the piece "move" places.

I've got a cool idea for a string quartet, it's in "three" parts. Starts off in a major key, all happy with the viloin taking the lead, then the violin sorta fades out and then the contrabass and cello and viola start playing in the relative minor of that key then at the very end the violin pops back in and it shifts to the major key.
