Faded Explorers

Hydra26

Hey, for those of you who want to get an honest to God Gibson Explorer I heard they're coming out with a faded model.

If you don't have any experience with them, I have a faded V and a stock Flying V for comparison.  They sound very similar although the faded sounds just a little bit thinner through an amplifier although it seems to resonate more unplugged.  It feels noticeably lighter due to the lack of all the layers of clear coat finish.  The clear coat makes for a "nicer" instrument, but some people prefer the thinner finish of the faded. The necks do feel different as well, if you don't like Gibsons because of the painted/glossy necks, the fadeds have a faster, more satiny feel to them.  Some folks have complained about the fret jobs or wood quality, but I've got to say, my faded had nice mahogany for the body, I even considered clear coating it at one point, and it has one of the lowest sustainable actions in my modest collection.  Not really a big deal to me, I play with higher action for the killer sustain, but some really like low action for shredding.

So anyway, on the topic of a faded explorer, Ishibashi has some nice photos of them on their site and my usual haunts do not, so here's some links to the relevant pages.  As is typical for the slab body fadeds, they come in worn brown and worn cherry (tv yellow might have sold me on trying one out, but as it is, I don't really need another explorer)
