Hey everyone... Here's my question:
What's the hardest part about being a girl guitarist (or bassist)?
For me, the hardest part about being girl guitarist is the fact that some guys don't think we can play as hard (or as good) as they can! I know tons of guys that I play better than. For the majority times, that extra spot in the band always goes to the brother. That's the hardest part: Being an equal. |

It will always be hard to be a female guitarist because for decades guitar has been a masculine thing. When I first started playing everyone laughed at me, so I just practiced a load more and knocked thier socks off. Use all these negative things to motivate you and prove them wrong.
I hope the girls on here are playing guitar/bass to be as good as they can be, not just "good for a girl" to show off to the guys.
As for the band I totally know how you feel! After weeks of searching I finally found a drummer, but all he wanted to do was try and hook up with me. He had no interest in music at all. Fuckwit! Haha. |

They explained some good reasons! another one is you cant paint your nails lol unless you use a pick, but one thing good is that we have smaller longer fingers so we can hit the chords easier and go down further on the frets |

I hate having to cut my nails on my left hand all the time. I'm one of those blessed with strong healthy nails that grow fast, so it's usually a toss up between nails looking good and playing guitar...that sucks a lot.
One of the disadvantages though is that out smaller hands don't always stretch as far.... |

Such a pain in the arse isn't it? I just shift and i'm using my baby finger alot now cos trying to stretch it means the note isn't full cos I cant apply enough pressure quickly cos I can't actually reach! |

Guys r soooo sexist sometimes, i hate it wen they dont take u seriously, then try 2 hook up with u. but i find it so annoying coz this guy that i know was looking 4 a bass player & i told him i was interested & he said no, apparently he's still lookin 4 one, lol! but i think its really good wen u c girls in bands, like um that bass player in the smashing pumpkins, forgot her name but shes pretty cool, and Lyn-Z from mindless self indulgence. i say if you're good enough, u should have the same rights as the boys, just becoz u play with boys doesn't mean u have 2 hook up with them. |

It's annoying how no one takes you seriously, and you get blamed more for mistakes. It's like:
*Guy guitarist screws up badly*
rest of band: Its ok, you'll get it next time.
*Girl guitarist screws up just as badly*
Rest of band: WTF! It's because you're a girl!
And the whole "lol ur a grl liek stop playn gutar and go by sum shoez now kay" |

I have a fear of failure, and guys that say stuff/do stuff like that only make it worse , so the only people I've played in front of are people that cant play. |

I'm lucky the guys I hang around with are pretty cool about the whole thing. some ask me for pointers and the others are fucking amazing guitar players and treat me like one of the guys and are stoked to teach me ( no more than they are with anyone else)
Mind you there are the odd guys that hate me cause I'm better and even more that hate me because I blow them off when they kiss ass only for the reason that I'm a chick with a wicked guitar ..... But I quickly drop those ones right away so it doesnt bother me in the least |

It's gotta be tough always feeling the urge to complain about the big, bad, testosterone-centric world of guitar. That's the worst.
No, but seriously, a female guitarist (not just a girl who plays guitar, I mean a real guitarist) is a rare and wonderul find. Just being a guitarist shows you've got an aggresive attitude towards skill based learning (and probably other things), which (agree or not) is not a female trait. RESPECT. |

I know. I have one friend who tries to play guitar but to be honest, she's kinda hopeless, bless her. girls get underestimated a lot. but if u can play real good, everyone will get impressed just cause you're a girl. so the gender thing works both ways.
btw, it sucks when you can't get into a band cause you're not a boy even if you're ten times better than them.

I don't think I've ever really had any problems with being a girl guitarist, I have plenty of male friends that play guitar, and I'm better than a few of them..I'm pretty sure they just treat me the same as a male guitarist. Although I do think if you were a girl guitarist trying to make it for a career, it's a lot more difficult |

Finding someone to learn or even jam with has been my greatest challenge.
There are ZERO other girls in my town that will touch anything other than a piano.
I just don't understand where these all female bands come from?
It seems impossible to find a chick that even knows the difference between a bass and a guitar.
Let's not forget to mention that no girl can play drums to click track (metronome).
Don't like what I am saying...

Guys think that girls can't play guitar, and I feel like I have to prove myself alot. I'm always competing with guys to prove that I'm a good guitarist. They're also the best to learn from though. I've learned that as a girl I have a tendancy to want to play just chords, but needing to compete with the guys (and wanting to learn more myself) has forced me to expand my horizons: listen to different music, play harder tabs. Guys have also taught me a lot of great parts that I would have never learned myself. They can be annoying but they've helped me more than anything. |

what really annoys me is how some guy guitarists believe that they are superior at guitar because they have been playing for so many years and can play a particular riff. also, just because im a girl, they dont think im good enough to be in a band with them coz, apparently, ill just complain. however, if anything, they have just made me kick my arse into gear and made me want to get better than them. |

our band was finally starting to seem like a reality, me, the singer and bassist are all girls, but when we tried to get a rythym guitarist, all the boys refused because 'they couldnt work with a female lead'. I find that boys end up getting wounded when you ask them to play rythym with a girl on lead.
I dont know why, they just do.
Also, boys tend to obsess over looks for bands. The ex-drummer for our band tried to kick me out because i ant that pretty. I told im to get to fuck, coz its my band and i started it |

Well Im very new to guitar playing (only had a month worth of real lessons so far) but Ive found that in one particular music store Im either ignored or talked down to. (no i havent asked any dumb questions to prompt this treatment - I alway know what Im after when I go in there)
Now this is a really large chain store and all the staff are male and work on commision.
Will I be going back there. No.
The funny thing is that their website welcomes all skill levels and claims to be able to offer advice/lessons ect. Yeah right!
Their loss. When I can afford to up grade all my gear I sure as hell wont be giving them my money! |

I'm pretty lucky in that I've got a good mate at school who I play with, and most of the year 12 boys (who I live with in the music block) respect me and we get on well. The really annoying thing is everybody else. The non-music boys don't go beyond the 'It's a girl with a wooden thing!"; that's if they notice me at all, because I don't doll up or undress like most of the other girls.
Girls are really frustrating because they don't even acknowledge me. Some guy can bring in some shiny dodge electric and that he can't play and they'll go hysterical. Me and my acoustic? They don't care.
Also, I play mostly blues, folk, classical and jazz with the odd bit of rock thrown in so I get ignored because I don't play pop. Especially because I only play acoustic. It gets so annoying having to explain that I don't play electric, NOT because it's 'too hard' or I haven't moved on from acoustic, but because I prefer acoustic and don't like the egotistical wankery that goes with it.
The other thing that really gets me is boys and roadie stuff. We just did a school musical where I worked backstage (as always) and all the manual arts kids who came to help set kept taking the stuff I was trying to bump in, because they couldn't "let a girl hurt herself" and felt their "manliness" was threatened. It was quite funny watching them struggle with things that I'd been carrying easily, though |

Well I'm a girl bassist, and it's hard to get in a band. Most guys don't like having a girl in the group, much less one who has an (semi) important role like bass or the drums to keep the beat. I guess they don't like thinking that a girl is 'leading' them or something, not sure.
But I also get underestimated, like my gender is a problem when playing. |

I can't see why it should be any harder to be a girl guitarist. Maybee that is because I don't want it to be harder. It's not the gender that makes a great guitarplayer, it's the guitarplayer her/himself. |

The only problems I've had are trying to find a band/people to jam with who honestly just want to make music. But that's partially just my area in general and the fact that I admittedly haven't really tried very hard. >_>
Being a girl guitarist is has actually been rather advantageous to me in most cases though. (attenshun, woohoo. Just..kidding.) There are so many guitarists out there that anything that sets you apart can be a good thing. (not that skills have less of a role in success)

Well me being a guy I have a few things to say.
I would love to be able to play with a girl over a guy because guys have ego's (like me) and they get in the way of a band. Girls usually like either easy pop music or anger grung so they aren't real worried about playing the longest riff the fastest, they are playing guitars so they can play music. I would also like a girl in my band because they have a very different taste in music then I do so they will bring more ideas to the table.
I think the reason most guys don't like to play guitar with a girl is because guys like to be superior in everything and to a guy, a guitar is a supirior item and skill so an inferior female cannot play because she is a girl.
Another GREAT asset a girl has over a guy is a beautiful voice. Now I know that you could just have a normal singer sing and not need to play guitar, but if all I have her do is sing it (by my discernment) it goes from a rock band to a girl band because then you give the girl too much power because she is the one doing ALL of the singing (there is where I draw the line and say girls shouldn't just sing they should also play an instrument). |

When guys are stupid about stuff like this- F*CK their opinion, ignore them. Sorry, but I honestly just can't imagine caring what other people think. I tend to ignore everybody; that's the only way I can imagine living. My friends' opinions don't matter, my familys' opinions don't matter, random guys' opinions don't matter... I always thought that just came from being an artist, but it's just the most honest advice I can give. Just being a guitarist, guy or girl, people will give you crap, especially if you want to make a career of it, and the idiots of the world will always try to bring you down when you're good at something, passionate about something, or better than them at something; although I don't think they consciously try to be mean. It just comes from being ignorant.
Just for the record, I'm a girl, and I play mostly black metal, sometimes punk. |

I agree with the whole overcoming that guitar isn't just a guy kinda thing. When I first started, (9 years ago) I never told anybody I played because the ones I did tell, they didn't believe I could do it. And that I couldn't, and that just brought me down. But, I still continued to play anyway. And now, I'm not afraid to say I play and I still and always will no matter what anybody says.
I do love the look on guys faces too, when you tell them you can play. It's just priceless. |
