I've been hearing that the preamp tubes in the switchblade 100 head are for input and phase inverter. But the websites contradict this saying that one of the 12ax7 tubes is for the driver.
One of the guys giving me alot of good advice explained to me that if there's no driver tube than the signal will be running through an analog circuit to be distorted meaning that it won't be "true" tube distortion. Now, he wasn't turning his nose up at it. He explained that the "tube purists" might do that but I love the way it sounds and I don't really give a shi* but it makes me wonder will I still need to use a hotplate and crank this thing to get the best tone out of it?
I'm not sure what impact this will have on the behavior of this amp. I'm still learning about tube amps, sadly enough it's only my second tube amp and the first time I've ever broached these subjects but if you do have the info that'll set me straight don't be afraid to get technical, I fix radios and computers for a living and I'm familiar with electronics. Any help anyone can give me would be great...

i had a hotplate with my switchblade. one of the best thing about this amp is you don't have to crank it to get that tube saturation imo. i end up selling the hotplate since i didn't find it anywhere useful with this amp. |
