i download most new music first, check it out, if its worth buying (which 80-90% of the time is) then, as soon as i have a little cash i head to the record store and pick up some cds ive downloaded and some that i havent heard. i mostly download cds from artists i've never heard to check them out before paying 10 buck for their cd. I SUPPORT MUSIC WORTH BUYING.

it takes a couple of months 2 make n album y'no?

Sometimes it can take a year or 2 of hard work. Not just the musicians but also the producers and engineers.

Just having something you can feel, smell, it's awesome :D

Here's what I do: Go to a shitload of gigs. Although I have a sizeable CD collection I haven't bought a CD in quite a while; my main method of aquiring music these days is downloading. But I constantly support still-gigging bands by attending their concerts on a regular basis. I am sure that the bands get substantially more from a ticket sale than a CD sale (right?) I'll never be able to attend a concert of EVERY band that I download, but I'm doing a pretty good job I reckon. Probably been to about 40 gigs this year - that's a lot more money than most people pump into the music business. I don't know about you, but it certainly eases my conscience about pirating.

Making more CDs because people download doesn't mean more people will buy it.

But it does give people the ability to buy it if they wish.

They can always manufacture more
If we use the logic that downloading is the same as stealing from the shelf, then let's assume that every download causes one cd to vanish from a shelf. The amount of people who download CDs is so high that the price of manufacturing so many replacements would certainly deal a huge blow to the company. But since it isn't the same, there's no need to. Making more CDs because people download doesn't mean more people will buy it.

Downloading is NOT the same as stealing from the shelf. It's still stealing, and you're still hurting an artist, but it's different.

It's just when you steal from the shelf, you prevent other people from being able to
pay for that disc. It's different when you download.

I still buy some CDs though.

the main reason that i like to buy cds is because i love to look at the artwork inside. Like in Evangelion by Behemoth, The way of all flesh by Gojira (digipak version) and the special edition of Shogun by Trivium. The artwork is great and adds alot of character to the music, and you just dont get that with downloads.

Mmmhmm. I Alphabetize my CDs so every time I wake up I see a picture of Angus Young about to vomit :p

Iv downloaded a ton of songs i wont lie... but iv uninstalled limewire and started re-buying all my CD's and favorites off the net. (play.com and amazon and others) not only is the quality allways immense but you get a little a book with the song lyrics in .. usually, and i miss that with downloading. also i love music way too much to half ass it and download a completly crap quality no lyric book version lol

I used to be a massive downloader too, now I look back and I can't believe I did any of that stuff.

When it only costs $0.99 to get a song from iTunes, the "I can't afford it" argument comes off as nothing short of stupid - even if you're a teenager.

Well said. Completely stupid, I used to hitch a ride to the nearest farm and help them bail hay for the day for a measly 25 bucks. That would get me a couple packs of cigarettes, 1 or 2 cassette tapes, and a bag. Well worth it in my opinion.

I don't get why they can't just shut limewire, 95% of people use it illegally, why can't there just be some common sense in law instead of loopholes all over the place?

Same reason you can put a car in cruise and leave the wheel and then sue the car company because it doesn't say in the manual not to leave the wheel.
