So, how about that jazz...

kirbyrocknroll

First thread lawl.

I really don't know where to start. I mean, I've had doses of jazz here and there, but those were the kind where I was casually listening, not really paying attention to the music. I've listened to John Scofield, and I like that sort of sound.

There's just so much out there and I have no idea how to start listening. It seems pretty hit and miss for me to find something I like since the genre is so broad. I'm mostly a hard rock, metal, and blues listener. I also enjoyed listening to Chris Poland's Chasing the Sun album, which wiki tells me is jazz-fusion. What artists would I seem to enjoy based on the music that I currently listen to?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

For fusion I always recommend Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way and Tribute to Jack Johnson albums. Other great fusion groups are Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra. If you haven't got Kind of Blue by Miles then that is an auto-recommendation, I also like Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus and My Favourite Things by John Coltrane as more standard jazz. Rahsaan Roland Kirk is another wonderful artist, but I don't haven anything outside a best of. For bebop, Charlie Parker is king, so get one of the numerous Bet Ofs around to see fi you liek the sound. Try some classics as well. Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian are awesome, both guitarists. Django Reinhardt is awesome as well. For something other than guitar try: Michel Camilo, Roberto Fonseca (both piano), John Coltrane(Sax). this list goes on. There is a great book called the jazz encyclopedia I can't remember the author but there are tons of musicians in order and with a bit of information and discography. Hope that helps. :) Try some classics as well. Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian are awesome, both guitarists. Django Reinhardt is awesome as well. Also one of the fusion greats - Al DiMeola.
And for the old school: Herbie Mann, Wynton Kelly, Hank Jones, Red Mitchell, Art Pepper, Kenny Drew. My suggestion is that you should find your local jazz club. Then start hanging there and start talking with the older people that witnessed the Blue Note era. That is the best jazz period ever.
