Old People Controversy...

Decembero

OK guys there seems to be something happening frequently in the columns and forums to do with bands who have been around for many many years...

These bands include Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Korn etc.

Many people leave comments saying that bands should just give up and stop trying to relive the "glory years". They are too old, and cant play the music anymore and their new albums are shit in comparison to the old material.

My opinion is that these musicians have a right to continue to live for music until the day they die. Music is their life and regardless if they have the ability to create and album that fits in with the modern music scene they should be praised for continuing to stay true to the one thing they believe in, to create music.

I believe that fans and critics have no right to tell a band to stop making music, to give up and to quit. If they don't like the album then their opinion is welcomed, however there is a line. Who the f*ck are we to tell Metallica to quit, even though they helped pioneer thrash and general metal. Something I'm sure inspired most of us to pick our guitars up for the first time. I know they are far from Kill 'Em All now, but should people hate them? Or be thankfull that they havent retired and still continue to live their lives bringing music to the world. This goes for all bands.

I just wondered if anybody here agrees/disagrees. And please, no senseless hating of any bands mentioned.

agreed... everyone has a right to do what they love, if they don't wanna step down, they have the right to stay.... and if you don't like their new albums, you have the right to not buy them... agreed... everyone has a right to do what they love, if they don't wanna step down, they have the right to stay.... and if you don't like their new albums, you have the right to not buy them...

I believe this point is further strengthened by the latest string of Metallica news articles, where UGers throw nothing but abuse at the band for pushing back the date for the latest album.

Seriously guys. WTF. Maybe they are making it better, maybe they are releasing it after their summer tour, maybe it is just a fucking rumour because it doesnt say it yet on their actual website...

I hope not everyone just spams them for the hell of it. Like them or not, show some respect, tell me if you think I am wrong.

in my opinion, most cases i've heard for someone saying a band is too old and should stop playing is speaking out for pure ignorance and egotistical stupidity. Unfortunately, that seems to be most of today's populous. in my opinion, most cases i've heard for someone saying a band is too old and should stop playing is speaking out for pure ignorance and egotistical stupidity. Cheers guys, I seem to notice too that it is usually 13 or 14 year old kids who say this kind of shit about the older bands, while they go off and listen to My Chemical Romance etc. Its bullshit. I am starting to hate young teenagers and Im only 20. i'm 15 and i totally agree with him! many of my friends belive that good bands are the new ones, and that old bands aren't that good, or are too old... the just don't know how to listen music and think that high school music is real musis.. lol.. they are ignorants, we don't have to hate them, and we have to tell them to have some respect for dhose bands that survived for so many years...

personally, i love heavy metal (the clasic one, not the modern one), however, i got a lot of respect for bands like The Beatles, or The Rolling Stones, who reached so much fame.

Check out my prefile plz....lol

I'm 17 and I would agree with everything you said.
So the only teenagers to hate are the stupid ones.
It's your career. Why quit when you're still motivated to go to work? How naive of people. And as long as Metallica is still selling millions of albums, why should they quit? Because some hokey-dorey Conservative noob hates them? Whatever.

You make a fair point, most bands deserve to play music til they die - except Metallica. Since they've churned out nothing but third rate crap for nearly two decades now. Ok I just got banned. I posted in Metallica's defence in the news article above, and I got a ban. I called someone a retard which I think done it, but fuck I see fucking swearing all the fucking time fucking everywhere.

This dickhead I replied to said that Metallica have been working on an album for 5 years, they are too old and he asked who actually cares about them anymore?

I called him a retard, I said that they hit the studio a year and a half ago, NOT 5 years, and I said that yes they are old, but millions of people still care about them, you cant basically just take a shit on all of them. They have like the 5th best selling album ever. He just said fuck you to all the fans. I called him a retard because I believe he needs to get some facts straight. Then i get banned. LAME!

^ nah some CC came along and dished out bans and warnings. Yeh it sucks, I think he was recently made a mod and has an itchy clicker finger.

Flaming is flaming apparently, calling someone a name is worthy of a warning, no matter what the circumstances, which is fucking bullshit i say. ultimate-guitar seriously needs to take circumstances into consideration when banning people.

On another note, in the forum of the banned I read that people are getting banned because they post pictures of fruit.... So calling someone a retard, which is much worse should definately be a ban, using their logic.

Old bands are where its at, s\I love the soul behind music out of the 60's/70's, the great metal out of the 80's, and the driven grunge out of the 90's. As these artists get older, they change. When they have dissolved for so long and reunite for a show, they will not sound the same, to the chagrin of many fans. Chris Cornell and Robert Plant were known for their incredible vocal range. Compare Audioslave vocals to early Soundgarden vocals. Compare the recent Led Zep tour vocals with old tour vocals... I assume it is here where ignorance and stupidity wins an argument in saying that old people "shouldn't" play, when they should be saying that they may not be the same as they were.

Every living soul on this earth deserves to listen, appreciate, and share music with the world.

I still stand by my Metallica speech - if this next album isn't at leats half as good as Ride the Lightning then they need to stop because its been 20 years since they last put out a half decent album now. Getting fucking stupid like. Thats fair enough, that is YOUR opinion....

However, how does someone define a good album? I mean, think of the millions of people who love the black album. I bet you there are people who think load and reload is better then ride the lightning, and I even bet some people only like Metallica because St.Anger got them into it.

(I believe ride the lightning is absolutely fan fucking tastic! And St. Anger imo is their worst album, but still good in it's own way.)

Lets face it man, it will never sound the same as the 80s albums, but why should they travel 20 years back in time to release an 80s album NOW?

We need a 2008 Metallica album that will kick serious ass in TODAYs music. If it blew Trivium and Machine Head and Slayer out of the water it would be the best thing ever. I guess we will never know until it comes out.

We can rest assured the new album will sell many millions of copies, whether it is good or not is another story.

If the creation of music were left to the fans, then musicians would no longer be called "artists"... instead, they'd be called "tools".

i'm for all old bands that still play. hell, half the bands i listen to are "old" bands but if metallica don't turn around from the damage that bob rock did to their sound i'm just gonna stick to the first four albums. You can barely call them a thrash band anymore, more like alternative. i'm for all old bands that still play. hell, half the bands i listen to are "old" bands but if metallica don't turn around from the damage that bob rock did to their sound i'm just gonna stick to the first four albums.
