recent hetfield sucks, but pre-black he was probably the best rhythm guitarist around. Seriously, try to play all of the MOP album without your picking arm falling off! recent hetfield sucks, but pre-black he was probably the best rhythm guitarist around. EmancipatedSoul

In no particular order...

Dimebag Darrel (Rest in Peace)
Muhammed Suicmez (Not that recognized, but amazing. Check out necrophagist)
John5 (He didn't reach his full potential with MM, but his Solo albums are hectic)
Buckethead (One deadly anonymous guitarist)
Michael Amott (and his brother, although Michael is better I rate, Arch Enemy)
Nergal (Perhaps not the most technical, but very catchy and heavy, Behemoth)
Randy Rhodes (Rest in Peace)
Yngwie Malmsteen
Zakk Wylde
Mikael Akerfeldt (Amazing songwriter and very good guitarist, Opeth).

1. Iommi (Anyone else is silly)
2. Tipton & Downing (Painkiller is probably the most metal guitar-work on record)
3. King & Hanneman (clones, so many clones)
4. Malmsteen (God of the nerds)
5. Shuldiner (the most metal person so far, but less well known so therefore less influential)
6. Hammett & Hetfield (the legacy remains, but so does that awful taste of the past decade. The new track is good though)
7. Van Halen (This man owned the 80s)
8. Rhodes (Not just a metal master, but a guitar legend)
9. Dimebag (Pretty much the person who kept real metal going in the late 90s and early 00s)
10. Murray & Smith (Every album with these two playing together has been a metal classic)

*note: This is not entirely reflective of my favourite metal bands. It is just a list of who I believe has done the most for metal and are therefore the "best".*
