What genres to include?

MHDrunk

We must, obviously include the main ones. These are:

Traditional Metal

Power Metal

Speed Metal

Thrash Metal

Death Metal
Black Metal

Doom Metal

Progressive Metal

We will include the 'expansions' (for lack of a better word) of these genres:

NWOBHM

North American Power Metal

European Power Metal

Bay Area Thrash

German Thrash

General Thrash

First wave/proto Death metal

'Straight up/old school' Death Metal

Scandinavian Death Metal

Florida Death Metal

NY Death Metal

Brutal Death Metal

Slam Death Metal

Technical Death Metal

First wave/Proto Black Metal

'Straight up/oldschool' Black Metal

Norwegian Black Metal

Suicidal Black Metal

NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal)

Folk Black Metal

Symphonic Black Metal

War Metal/Australian War Metal

Death/Doom

Black/Doom

Funeral Doom

Traditional Doom

[whatever Progressive subgenres there are] (I don't know :p:)

Blackened Death

Blackened Thrash

Deathrash
Pagan Metal
Gothic Metal

and all of the cores. I know little about these genres, and so whoever chooses to do them can choose which to include and where to draw the line.

If it is necessary at any point to describe a non-metal genre, ie, if it heavily influences one that is metal, then we will. Otherwise, this should be limited to metal.

Please do not discuss in this thread the differences between genres. This thread is about discussing which to include.

I'll be taking core, thank you.

And all I will be saying about Hardcore is that it is combined with metal to form these subgenres, and I'll state that grind ultimately came from crust punk, but I won't delve too much into the hardcore/punk scene.

hm, put all those under the "cores" and we'll links some of their genres from melodeath as well as well as from ol' grindcore and whatever else they originated from hm, put all those under the "cores" and we'll links some of their genres from melodeath as well as well as from ol' grindcore and whatever else they originated from

i don't think that you can really do 'generic' versus 'standouts', as if this is opinion based it's utterly useless. i don't think that you can really do 'generic' versus 'standouts', as if this is opinion based it's utterly useless.

i could probably find out a fair bit about crossover thrash but again i don't know much about it. i know a few people on soulseek who could help me out though

i don't know what you mean, evil hat, we haven't mentioned anything about 'generic' or 'standouts'.

i will add folk as a base genre

well, if he means generic and stand-out in style (objective) as oppose to quality (subjective) then that is fine. of course, what is generic and stand-out is open to discussion well, if he means generic and stand-out in style (objective) as oppose to quality (subjective) then that is fine. of course, what is generic and stand-out is open to discussion

if so, it should be labeled as Progressive or something, cause standout sounds opinion based and a family tree based on what it's makers think is good or not is pointless.

and so hence, elaborate and simplistic...

uh offshoots are just lyrically themed crap like pirate pagan viking and what not, yet again, those "people" werent really alive to mess with electric guitars, unless they can actually get backing that their note patterns or something were actually used by people of said centuries then sure, but i dont think any of them can and so hence, they're just on anormal genre with silly lyrical themes

obviously I said I'd eliminate bias from my part of the tree -melodeath- so expect nothingless than it being unbiased

suicidal black metal is a real genre, although it should prolly be called Depressive Black Metal instead on the tree as i've heard that more and it's more enompassing. suicidal black metal is a real genre, although it should prolly be called Depressive Black Metal instead on the tree as i've heard that more and it's more enompassing.

yea, evil hat is right. pagan metal can fall under folk metal and pagan black metal can be mentioned in passing in the black metal and NSBM sections

and we will include gothic metal

I'll clear up my post. I guess we'll have the NWOAHM and then the exceptions, the bands that borderline metal and metalcore, and the bands that started the phase. I'll clear up my post.
