How long have you been learning music theory?

kirbyrocknroll

I "devirginized the forum" as someone would say!

The question is the in the title. I learned the major scale in 3rd grade before I was even interested in music. We were taught by a teacher whose class everyone hated because it was boring. I didn't mind though. Then I started learning again when I first visited MT, in May of 2006.

For long time all I knew was the major scale and minor and major pentatonic shapes on my bass until last year, when I started to look at walking lines with my bass teacher then I just read as much as I could about everything. Since I've been playing piano (12 years). It started kinda basic for a while, then I taught myself more and more complex stuff, then I slid into an AP Music Theory class with flying colors. well, I knew how to play the C major scale on a piano before joining UG... that was pretty much it for my theory (with a few open chords on guitar but not knowing why that's how it's played... Em / C / G / Am / A / E I think... loll )

And I joined UG in Feb07.. I could say I've "joined" MT in March07 so it's been about 5 months that I started learning some Music Theory

^ ya learn the theory, like in yer head. then you apply it in a practical application, then forget the technicalities of it after a while. in other words, learn the rules because only then will you know how to use them AND break them. ^ ya learn the theory, like in yer head. then you apply it in a practical application, then forget the technicalities of it after a while. in other words, learn the rules because only then will you know how to use them AND break them.

One year. Got my guitar just over a year ago and messed around making cheesy riffs and trying to find decent sounding chords from the book I have. Now I've just learned modes and how to use the circle of fifths and I've been writing songs in scale for a while now. Now they're written in key. :) Got to say I learnt most of it from just reading threads in MT. One year.
