I would add "in your opinion". And then they would argue it was true and I would just sigh.

Yeah, this happens to me a lot.

Yeah, "in your opinion" is definitely a good start; then I'd try to add something about ignorant degenerates who don't have an open mind. (Piss 'em off a bit, ya know?) I think anyone who is under the opinion that physical or verbal assaulting someone who says your music is crap is a good thing is in the wrong group. Seriously. In answer, I'd say "And what do you like?" and when they answer, I'd say "oh that's great, what bands do you like?" then start a discussion about their favourite bands and what ones i like in that genre. pretty simple really. Well, its better off not to argue with them. If you know them its easy to find out why they listen to what they do and refute their opposition. People like to use music as an emotional extension of themselves. Almost a hundred percent of the time a person will listen to a specific genre in order to match a particular persona in which they would like to see themselves in. Angry 16 year olds like emo, grunge, and metal. Socialite hopefuls listen to pop radio. Insecure people use their knowledge of obscure indie music to compensate their shortcomings. Lots of people who love only country tend to wear a lot of camo. (Just some typical scenarios. I know there's grey area. Don't come at me.) So if they raise issues with others it really only comes down to a ploy of them projecting their social insecurities by means of musical argument. It's another way to say 'I'm better than you because_____.' because they lack real confidence and therefore require knocking others down in order to promote their self-image.

To answer the question, the conversation cannot be avoided because that's a victory for the other person. You've sidestepped someone who has challenged you. Don't sacrifice your voice of opinion to cater their ego. Likewise, it also can't end in contention. Genre battling is a useless, endless arguement of apples and oranges. Isolate why the person enjoys their pick. Work with it and give them examples of what they like in other places. Country to folk; alternative to classic rock; etc. If you open a crack, then they might become a little more tolerant of what others like.

Besides, if you're/they're getting paid then who is he or she to argue?

sorry for the long post. i'm jacked on caffeine.
