The Progressive List! Looking for new prog bands?

Myung-trucci

I'm building a list of all progressive bands, and what sort of prog they play. But I'm no prog wizard, so some help would be good. If you know a great prog band that's not on this list, or you feel a band on this list are not prog or are listed in the wrong subcategory, post here to help the list! I'll start-

Blotted Science is another, lesser known one.
Only one album so far (came out in 2007): The Machinations of Dementia.
All of the songs are tuned in some drop A variant, and the style is prog thrash, if anything. Really heavy for prog music :)
guitarist - Ron Jarzombek
bassist - Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse fame
drummer - Charlie Zeleny, the drummer for Jordan Rudess' solo albums

WHY DOES NOBODY ON THIS FORUM MENTION PAIN OF SALVATION! Easily the best prog band ever. Check out the Entropia album, and tell me that I am wrong.

Oh, and Vanden Plas too

Linear Sphere - There's a thread about them in the metal forum for more info.

EDIT:
Forgot a couple:

Gordian Knot - prog rock/metal project by bassist Sean Malone. It's had plenty of prog guests, including Myung and Jarzombek.

Zero Hour - little known prog metal band. Interesting style, though a bit repetitive. I've only heard their 2001 album, though, so they may have improved quite a bit since then. They loves them some odd time signatures.

Though I just realized, The Fall of Troy definitely deserve a place on this list.

I thinking sorting them in genres would create too much dispute. If we used categories like, Heavy, Less Heavy, Classic, and Modern. Heavy could be used for BTBAM. Less heavy for bands like Tool (who have a heavy kind of sound, but not to the extreme.) Classic is obvious, Yes, Gentle Giant, King Crimson. Modern can be prog that isn't heavy but is modern, The Flower Kings, Three, The Pineapple Theif and other things like that.

That's just an idea, but it does need to be at LEAST alphabetized.

MGMT, though they're not exactly known for being "prog", but look up "Metanoia".

14 minute long, Donvan-Meets-Pink Floyd psychedelic prog song. It's brilliant.

Here, I'll give a link: http://www.playlist.com/searchbeta/tracks#MGMT%20M etanoia Just click the little "play" thing.

The second half of "Oracular Spectacular" is also pretty damn psych-prog influenced.

Pour examplar:

The Handshake

Future Reflections

Comus - Progressive folk. Very haunting; had a big influence on Opeth. First Utterance is essential listening.

IQ - Similar to Genesis, but with better guitars. Dark Matter is an amazing album.

Hieronymus Bosch - Progressive death metal from Russia. Equivoke is awesome.

Disillusion - Progressive melodic death metal from Germany. Back to Times of Splendor is one of my favorite albums of all time; if you like either metal or prog, you NEED to check this out.

Cormorant - Proggy melodic death metal, with lots of Slough Feg influence.
