Who would it be? My personal favorite would be Mikael Akerfeldt, maybe not as technically proficient as the likes of Petrucci and Michael Romeo, but I just love his tone and style of playing. Although Petrucci and Romeo are awesome.

Easily John Petrucci. I guess I'm kinda biased seeing how Dream Theater were one of my first (and still favorite) prog metal bands. But everything about Dream Theater, especially Petrucci, is God-Like, so I think it justifies my answer. A close second would be Paul Waggoner from Between the Buried and Me. His versatility amazes me, even after about two hundred Colors and Alaska play-throughs. Easily John Petrucci. Alex lifeson. Petrucci's in second though.

Edit:^Yeah, Waggoner's amazing. Colors is one of my favorite albums ever recently. I love how there's just sweet guitar solo's, and then it'll go into some country interlude thing.

Robert Fripp for sure! The man who basically started prog, not to mention a kickass guitarist. Second would be Lifeson then Petrucci. Petrucci has all the shredding and speed playing down, but he can't pull off the feeling and emotion Lifeson gives in his solos. Robert Fripp for sure! If you're talking about skill, I would say John Petrucci. His technical ability is basically limitless. If you're talking about composition/writing, I would say Paul Waggoner. He writes the most emotional music I have ever heard. His portrayal of emotion is perfect. If you're talking about skill, I would say John Petrucci. His technical ability is basically limitless. Paul Waggoner, anybody? The dude can play like hell when he wants to, but he generally has a more refined playing style than someone like Petrucci, who, as much as I love him, tends to only shred as fast as he can. Plus that jazzy clean solo Paul does in Selkies gives me an orgasm everytime I hear it. So yeah, I say Paul Waggoner. Paul Waggoner, anybody? hate to go with the popular opinion.... but petrucci, ive listened to dream theater for some time now(6 years?) and i have explored all types of music and seen all kinds of guitar players live.... but petrucci is the most talented prog guitarist i have ever had the pleasure of seeing live... not only that he is one of the better guitarists i have heard of in general. hate to go with the popular opinion.... but petrucci, ive listened to dream theater for some time now(6 years?) and i have explored all types of music and seen all kinds of guitar players live.... but petrucci is the most talented prog guitarist i have ever had the pleasure of seeing live... not only that he is one of the better guitarists i have heard of in general.
