Genre defining band

Jastul

Ok, so I've heard many bands, from Dream Theatre to Epica, be referred to as prog, and some of those bands I consider progressive, others power and others symphonyc metal, I want to know which band do you guys think is the one that best represents the genre and separates it from others such as epic metal, power metal, symphonyc metal and such, but, more importatnly I want to know WHY you guys think that

..........let the debate rage on, I mean, begin

a little vague? basically all I'm asking is "In one band, define progressive or power metal" what's vague about that? I just named Dream Theatre and Epica because they're all bands I've heard called prog, not to make this thing more complicated or vague.... seriously a little vague? basically all I'm asking is "In one band, define progressive or power metal" what's vague about that? Progressive metal IS Dream Theater. I'm sorry but there is absolutely no question. Progressive metal IS Dream Theater. I'm sorry but there is absolutely no question.

The thing is, you can't define it in one band. Prog is kind of a vague, emcompassing genre and there are many sounds underneath it. The thing is, you can't define it in one band. Prog is kind of a vague, emcompassing genre and there are many sounds underneath it.

Yeah, Dream Theater is the band that represents the progressive better.
Epica is more symphonic metal I think.

Pagans Mind - Progressive metal geniuses y? Well first off Prog is genre's mixed in between genres. DT had some albums that i would consider Progressive Rock. Pagans Mind has the prog thing mastered. They base the music around the riff and have that atmospheric prog feel that bands seem to stray away from.. DT sometimes become a jam band less then a prog metal band..

Hammerfall - Power Metal from album to album this band is all about metal and steel and a lot of cheese which is what power metal is all about. Power metal is about myths and legends with superior hooks and choruses that just stick in ur head for days. Notable mentions are Dream Evil and Nocturnal Rites
Pagans Mind - Progressive metal geniuses y?
