I think that the real "trick" to getting Cray style tones is to use heavy picks, heavy gage strings (11's) and a heavy attack.
As for amp settings, I would start with the amp set clean and the tone controls set flat. Play in positions 2 and 4 and have some one adjust your amp settings till you hear some thing you like.
After you get the clean tone you like, you can aways dirty it up with a low gain over drive I like ts 808 and ts 9 style (Bad Monkey, Maxon od808, Ibanez TS9 etc) pedals for this.
