24 Jul 2008 11:01:00

The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre will host one of the most prestigious events of the coming snooker season, the Royal London Watches Grand Prix.

The worlds elite snooker players will compete in Glasgow following World Snookers decision to move one of the sports biggest ranking events to Scotlands largest city.

The dates for the tournament are October 11 to 19 and it will be televised by the BBC and Eurosport. The competition will feature star names such as defending champion Marco Fu, 888.com World Champion Ronnie OSullivan, Stephen Hendry, John Higgins and Glasgows very own Stephen Maguire.

The Grand Prix has a long history dating back to 1984 when Dennis Taylor won the inaugural event.

Title sponsor for the event is Royal London Watches, one of the UKs leading suppliers of watches, watch straps and associated products.

A spokesman for World Snooker said: We would like to thank all the staff at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre for their co-operation and assistance during the last two years. Snooker has a rich history with the AECC and the Royal London Watches Grand Prix has been well supported during this time.

Glasgow is the commercial capital of Scotland as well as having many cultural sites and first class sports facilities, so we are delighted to be staging one of our biggest tournaments there. The Royal London Watches Grand Prix is an outstanding event which brings the best players in the world together and will provide great entertainment for the fans.

John Sharkey, CEO at The SECC, said: We are very much looking forward to hosting the Royal London Watches Grand Prix in October. It is a fantastic opportunity not just for our venue but for Glasgow and further enhances our growing reputation for hosting world class sport.

Tickets for the tournament are likely to go on sale in early August and details of how to book your seats will be released shortly via the SECC Box Office or on-line at www.worldsnooker.com or www.secctickets.com .
