Thrash Brotherhood

I just got an email back from Derek Sykes (guitarist for DH back in the day), who has given me the go ahead to do this thing on the condition that there are no labels involved at all. So this will be what the Onslaught tribute was going to be in the first place, in other words 10 - 15 tracks of class DH covers for free download. Verm, I expect you to be in on this or I'll fucking backhand you.

What do people reckon?

My initial message;

"Assuming you read this and run this page, hi Derek!

I started up a project entitled 'The Devil's Legion: A Tribute to Onslaught' awhile back, which is so far tunring out very well and a lot of interest has been expressed in doing a similar thing for Demolition Hammer. The basic idea is to have say, ten to fifteen bands cover a DH song each then put this 'compilation' up for free download. Its worked extremely well for the Onslaught tribute so a similar idea for DH isn't an impossibility.

However, I'd like to put this through you first and foremost as I always feel that I should have the approval of at least one band member. I will not go ahead with this project if you are not interested in the idea, as I feel it would be almost direspectful in a way.

I don't expect an immeidate answer, in fact I don't expect anything - but if you're interested in this idea then please reply. If I'm messaging a page that doesn't have any direct involvment with Mr. Sykes, sorry for wasting your time haha."

And Derek's reply;

That idea sounds great & I appreciate the formal request, although it wasn't necessary. We dont have many reservations about fans doing whatever they want with our music (as long as its not a record company).

I know, but I guess I thought it's easier to sound heavy in lower tunings. Demolition Hammer is solid proof that the tuning doesn't make the heaviness and brutality.

Because Corporal Punishment was never relaesed on record, the demo is only available for streaming on the ban's MySpace. There aren't any lyrics available for it elsewhere because its pretty much an unreleased song.

Well, right now I've got a pretty cheap microphone that's about ten years old. I just plug it directly into the mic slot on my PC. I recorded with Audacity as well, but the recording sounded so faint that I had to turn the volume in Audacity all the way up - the static was unbearable.

If I wanted to, I could spend about 1200€ on equip, but I'm reluctant to do so since I have to pay part of my driver's licence and I'm not planning on recording much in the future.

I'd ditch Human Dissection for it because that's my least favorite DH song.
Although this is merely how I would do it, in the end it's up to you.

A friend of mine said that the drums are triggered on EoV but does anyone know if that's true? It would only make sense because every beat is so clear on that album and it would probably prove to be quite difficult to play the parts without triggered bass drums. I didn't really believe him at first though, but when he asked me if I'd seen or heard them play the song live I thought he could be right.

Vinny never used triggers, ever. And thats a stone cold fact haha, your friend is probably just looking for an excuse to soil Vinny's name. The beats are so clear because - brace yurself, it may cme as a shock - he was a fucking incredible drummer. Also bear in mind that EoV has almost completely different prodution to TE as well and the drums are really forward in the mix.

My friend was pretty much only ripping on me for listening to Human Dissection on a school computer. He's just one of those types that have to say something just to argue or make others look stupid, but he did say he'd "read it somewhere" and he made a valid point by stating that there's no live footage of the song to be found. I know it's possible to record the drum parts without a trigger even if you weren't able to play the whole song without stopping because you can glue the parts togheter, but it would definately have been a lot easier if they had just used triggers. That's why I think it's very possible that he used triggers (if MIDI sounds were already developed enough back in 1991). And yes, it would've been an acceptable thing, especially in this case.

And even if they were, I imagine they already had those triggers that adjust to how dynamic/hard you play the drums. It wouldn't make Vinny less of a great drummer.
