Demolition Hammer Tribute CONFIRMED

postmortem2006

I just got an email back from Derek Sykes (guitarist for DH back in the day), who has given me the go ahead to do this thing on the condition that there are no labels involved at all. So this will be what the Onslaught tribute was going to be in the first place, in other words 10 - 15 tracks of class DH covers for free download. Verm, I expect you to be in on this or I'll fucking backhand you.

What do people reckon?

Heres the messages too - forgot to post them before, d'oh!

My initial message;

"Assuming you read this and run this page, hi Derek!

I started up a project entitled 'The Devil's Legion: A Tribute to Onslaught' awhile back, which is so far tunring out very well and a lot of interest has been expressed in doing a similar thing for Demolition Hammer. The basic idea is to have say, ten to fifteen bands cover a DH song each then put this 'compilation' up for free download. Its worked extremely well for the Onslaught tribute so a similar idea for DH isn't an impossibility.

However, I'd like to put this through you first and foremost as I always feel that I should have the approval of at least one band member. I will not go ahead with this project if you are not interested in the idea, as I feel it would be almost direspectful in a way.

I don't expect an immeidate answer, in fact I don't expect anything - but if you're interested in this idea then please reply. If I'm messaging a page that doesn't have any direct involvment with Mr. Sykes, sorry for wasting your time haha."

And Derek's reply;

"Dave,

That idea sounds great & I appreciate the formal request, although it wasn't necessary. We dont have many reservations about fans doing whatever they want with our music (as long as its not a record company).

So feel free to go ahead with your project and I'd love to hear the finished products.

Thanks

Derek"

Because Waking Into Nightmares = WIN (get it? lol), and the singer has a DH shirt and DH are on their top friends list on myspace so they must love 'em! :haha:

A member of Warbringer actually did the liner notes for the Necrology compilation - shit compilation, but cool liner notes. Slim chance of us getting them to do it but I can always try - hey, I managed to get Blood Tsunami on the Onslaught one so why not? Verm, you can have IHW if you want. I'm looking forward too listening to the whole Onslaught tribute. I've managed to refrain from listening to anything aside from Kemakils, Vindicators and the PFH demo. I wanna enjoy it and it all be new.

Also, will it be free or will it cost monies?

That's a great idea to get Warbringer involved, but their record label might want in on this in some way.

I know, but I guess I thought it's easier to sound heavy in lower tunings. Demolition Hammer is solid proof that the tuning doesn't make the heaviness and brutality.

Cause I sure do. I mean I get what most stuff means in the context, but some of the words are just ridiculously fancy and uncommon. They must've had a dictionary or a medical book or something when they wrote some of the lyrics cause who the fuck gets those words in their mind when they start writing lyrics? :haha:

EDIT: I'm talking about the lyrics on their second album, I haven't gotten to the point of reading the lyrics on Tortured Existence bar maybe .44 Caliber Brain Surgery :headbang:

Incandescent surge, rhyolite monstrosity
Expanding mass of lava and pumice
Columns of smoke
Solid sheet of flames
Paroxysmal rupture, volcanic edifice
Scintilating fissure, erupting orifice

Avalanche
Vapor cloud
Interlacing fiery trails
Wall of toxic fumes rapidly asphyxiates
Intrusive tuft prevails

Easily my favorite DH song. I couldnt tell you why I just love it. 'Intrusive tuft prevails' is one of the single most awesome lyrics ever.

I have to say, the riff after the solo in Skull Fracturing Nightmare is so fucking ball crushingly heavy, that my scrotum is so horrifically mangled, I can no longer perform my regular routine of self fellatio.

Sacrificing lives with apathy
Torturing their captives ruthlessly
Misery and anguish, morbid pleas
Forgotten ghastly atrocities

Load the chamber, hammer cocked
Jam the barrel in my mouth
Need a reprieve from my misery
Unrelenting anxiety
All I ask is one final plea
.44 caliber brain surgery... surgery"

Verm, how the hell do you manage to make your songs sound so good? Which programs do you use and so on? I tried recording a few riffs but screwed it up big time, they sound horrible.

What's your budget? Or is that a stupid question?

Well, right now I've got a pretty cheap microphone that's about ten years old. I just plug it directly into the mic slot on my PC. I recorded with Audacity as well, but the recording sounded so faint that I had to turn the volume in Audacity all the way up - the static was unbearable.

If I wanted to, I could spend about 1200€ on equip, but I'm reluctant to do so since I have to pay part of my driver's licence and I'm not planning on recording much in the future.

Put about 200 to 300 of those Euromoneys aside for recording equipment.

An SM-57 and any decent USB interface/mixer will be enough to get you started, although really a great deal of how the final product sounds is just down to your own experience and knowledge of music production. You really don't need amazing equipment, you just need to know how to use the tools at your disposal.

TL;DR- Google "How to record metal".

Thanks. 300 actually sounds OK, didn't think it was going to be so cheap, relatively speaking. Thanks. 300 actually sounds OK, didn't think it was going to be so cheap, relatively speaking.

Maybe it's a bit early, but what will be the name of the whole thing? I was thinking of something along the lines of "Skull Fracturing Nightmares", but perhaps that's too unoriginal. Hm, don't know. I think it's hard to decide.

Also, TE and EoV are only represented by four songs each? How about making that five? In that case we could add Neanderthal without losing one of the other songs on TE and could add another one for EoV... I myself would like to see the title track and Pyroclastic Annihilation on it. I'd ditch Human Dissection for it because that's my least favorite DH song.
Although this is merely how I would do it, in the end it's up to you. :p

Srsly though, if we we're to look at things realistically, who could play that song on drums?

Oh. Fuck. :haha:

"Can't handle it"? I just think the first part of it plods, something that usually doesn't happen with them. If it was shorter it would be kick-ass, but it becomes tedious after a while.

And you're right Severi (did I spell that right?). Vinny must have been a human drum machine of some kind. Man, I love his drumming....

A friend of mine said that the drums are triggered on EoV but does anyone know if that's true? It would only make sense because every beat is so clear on that album and it would probably prove to be quite difficult to play the parts without triggered bass drums. I didn't really believe him at first though, but when he asked me if I'd seen or heard them play the song live I thought he could be right.

E: And, yup you got my name right there.

Vinny never used triggers, ever. And thats a stone cold fact haha, your friend is probably just looking for an excuse to soil Vinny's name. The beats are so clear because - brace yurself, it may cme as a shock - he was a fucking incredible drummer. Also bear in mind that EoV has almost completely different prodution to TE as well and the drums are really forward in the mix. Vinny never used triggers, ever. Triggers are more to do with the recording than the drummer's playing, at least in a studio context. Most modern recordings feature triggered drums even with the best drummers, because it's just so much easier to get a clear sound.

Having been produced in the late 80s though, I very strongly doubt it. MIDI still sounded like this back then:

Hmm, okay but can I just ask where you got that info Dave?

My friend was pretty much only ripping on me for listening to Human Dissection on a school computer. He's just one of those types that have to say something just to argue or make others look stupid, but he did say he'd "read it somewhere" and he made a valid point by stating that there's no live footage of the song to be found. I know it's possible to record the drum parts without a trigger even if you weren't able to play the whole song without stopping because you can glue the parts togheter, but it would definately have been a lot easier if they had just used triggers. That's why I think it's very possible that he used triggers (if MIDI sounds were already developed enough back in 1991). And yes, it would've been an acceptable thing, especially in this case.

When you hit for example the bass drum it makes the same sound regardless of how hard you hit it (okay, not quite "regardless") when it is triggered. It's possible to trigger the whole set, too.

Well I asked Derek :haha:

Not to mention that it seems your mate is just an idiot who doesn't know jack shit about DH. Vinny didn't NEED triggers, he was just fucking good - it sounds slightly odd on EoV because the drums are really far forward in the mix, and they had a different producer than before - theres no live footage of the song live because live footage of DH in general is hard to come by, especially stuff from the second and third albums. I've seen about eight live videos and only one of them was from EoV (Carnivorous Obsession).

Yeah it was possible that Vinny used triggers, but he didn't. Next time you see him, punch your friend really really fucking hard in the face for me.

They do sound triggered, but if Derek says they were not, then they weren't.

And even if they were, I imagine they already had those triggers that adjust to how dynamic/hard you play the drums. It wouldn't make Vinny less of a great drummer.

Anyway - I love the production of EoV. It sounds so crisp and metallic, but not too clean or anything. Somehow it makes everything sound even heavier, more clinical in a way...
