I agree fully, perfection is overrated and not the goal one should hope for when just starting out with a band. Having crap sound or of timing in places for a first show is no bad thing at all. Yeah, it's annoying but it's part of progression.

I've embarked on re-recording the Onslaught covers in the more recent, more aggressive Vindicator sound, as heard on Outbreak. The first versions were recorded in a kind of inspirational void, and are devoid of personality.

I think Witch Hunt will turn out awesome, however if I still can't get the vocals comfortable on Lightning War I'm afraid I'm just going to have to throw in the towel on that track. It doesn't fit my vocal style, or musical style for that matter.

Doesn't really matter - I thought Witch Hunt was brilliant personally. Besides, look at what Rusted Valor did with Shellshock - its not their style either but they still managed it. If you need a hand, just ask.

EDIT: Shellshock is up on the Legion player, and a Bloodbrawl Guitar demo will be put up on the band page this week when I can be arsed to actually record it and shit. Might be finishing Power from hell this week, again if I can be arsed.

Indeed. Another great "proto groove" album is Devastation's Idolatry. Well, at least I think it's fair enough to call it a proto groove album cause it has that certain feel to it.

Been doing a fair bit of work lately on the gr1m kvlt blackness that is Noktvrnalis.

I'm still undecided as to lyrical themes, I don't know whether to go pure cliche and just throw Immortal lyrics into a mixer, or to go for a more personalised route and sing about the vast underground labyrinth empire of the rat men; blasphemously gr1m and krieg lyrics of horned, clawed and fanged vermin wielding iron blades and powerful dark magic... Ahem.

I dunno. Either way I have a pretty nifty intro down, like Keep of Kalessin crossed with Bathory. For the opening track I'm working on there is a very Black Wizards/Dark Horizons feel going on. And of course there's the obligatory Immortal worship going on in the various other riffs I've concocted.

I'm now taking time off writing (again) because I really want to play this stuff with a band and I don't want to drift off to different kinds of musical spheres which will result in the same old thing: me putting the old songs to dust in the corner cause they're not in the same vein as the new stuff.

I guess it's time for me to start learning some new stuff about the guitar and music in general cause it will surely take a while 'till there's any band shit going for this project.

If it's hard in Sheffield (population: 520 700), then imagine how hard it is for me to have any band shit going, when I live in a town with a population of less than 1500 and the nearest "big" city is a bit over 100 km away (population: 59 200) and another slightly bigger city 120 km away (population: 76 600). So don't be telling how hard it is to find good musicians in Sheffield when it's almost the size of Finlands capital.

It was just weird cause I got the inspiration from Thrash Bandicoot and I actually managed to make it sound awesome, a bit like a fusion of jazz and some of the music on the game (had to use a certain un-thrash instrument though). Also, I'm gonna name the song after a certain map on the first Crash, too. Cookies if anyone guesses what that map is.

Bleh, all this talk is getting me nostalgic. It's been years since I bought/painted any models, but a while ago I had a great time with an old mate getting drunk, and having an epic Skaven/Ork battle in his attic, both of us acting in character

Partially what made me decide to go all Skaven on the Noktvrnalis project come to think of it.

Speaking of which, I'm making considerable headway. I'm just putting the finishing touches on the composure and all the atmospheric stuff, then I'll get round to writing some gr1m lyrics. Recording will a be a quick affair, since I'm going as intentionally kvlt and lo-fi as possible, then just soaking it in reverb to make it authentically atmospheric.

Bleh, all this talk is getting me nostalgic. It's been years since I bought/painted any models, but a while ago I had a great time with an old mate getting drunk, and having an epic Skaven/Ork battle in his attic, both of us acting in character :haha: Partially what made me decide to go all Skaven on the Noktvrnalis project come to think of it.

Speaking of which, I'm making considerable headway. I'm just putting the finishing touches on the composure and all the atmospheric stuff, then I'll get round to writing some gr1m lyrics. Recording will a be a quick affair, since I'm going as intentionally kvlt and lo-fi as possible, then just soaking it in reverb to make it authentically atmospheric.

Sort of like creating a sense of calmness or confusion for example... or just to strenghten the atmosphere. I blame this love for clean parts partly on getting into jazz and progressive music... and Metallica

So anyways I'm thinking of asking a few guys if they'd like to start up this project, even though it'll likely fall flat on it's face cause these guys aren't the easiest to work with.

Yeah, it does often fall into that trap. It's difficult to get right nowadays, since Atheist did it so well years ago. I think there is great room for innovation in Deathrash anyway, as the basic framework is rather straightforward, leading to lots of your own embellishments. Like acoustic, or jazzy things.

Slight update, chaps.

New version of Witch Hunt is looking likely to be done before Christmas. After spending a long while tweaking guitar tone and suchlike, I think I'm pretty prepared. Re-re-recording shall commence next week. Perfection takes time, however, and I'm not afraid to scrap it (again) if it isn't as good as I'm aiming for.

Which brings me to Lightning War- It's unlikely I'll be able to top my previous mediocre effort, nor do I have the time to waste on attempting to do so. It is a futile effort. So, I'm pretty much just going to cut my losses and abandon that song.

Finally, regarding Noktvrnalis, don't worry, something will eventually see the light of day. It was only supposed to be a quick project for lulz, but Real Life somewhat interfered and I lost a lot of the motivation and inspiration that was fuelling it. I can't say when, but I will eventually get back to it.

Aye, we've had a massive lineup shift and of course, we've all been really upset about Mike so we've taken some time out. Myself and Chris (bass) are getting new instruments for Gaymas his year and our new guitarist Olly is in Nottingham for the Christmas seasons with his family, so we're all getting back to work on it in the new year. We're having a band meeting tomorrow about everything so I'll update accordingly, but the schedule we've been discussing the last few days is a fucking violent one. Very demanding, so hopefully we'll get so frustrated and angry that we'll actually get the album out by easter!

And Fred, don't get me wrong Verm's version of Lightning War is GOOD, but when you compare it to say, Rusted Valor's cover of Shellshock then it just pales. Verm kinda saw that he couldn't do it justice I think as its a song thats exceptionally difficult to 'heavy up' (though the demo version is supposedly brutal as fuck) so I'm looking for another band to do it. I'm also considering dropping Killing Peace in favo for something else, maybe Contract in Blood or something. The Devil's Legion is in a bit fo turmoil right now since no one is actually staying in touch hahaha

We're having a band meeting tomorrow about everything so I'll update accordingly, but the schedule we've been discussing the last few days is a fucking violent one. Very demanding, so hopefully we'll get so frustrated and angry that we'll actually get the album out by easter! And Fred, don't get me wrong Verm's version of Lightning War is GOOD, but when you compare it to say, Rusted Valor's cover of Shellshock then it just pales. Verm kinda saw that he couldn't do it justice I think as its a song thats exceptionally difficult to 'heavy up' (though the demo version is supposedly brutal as fuck) so I'm looking for another band to do it. I'm also considering dropping Killing Peace in favo for something else, maybe Contract in Blood or something. The Devil's Legion is in a bit fo turmoil right now since no one is actually staying in touch hahaha

Yup.

Quite simply, looking back in retrospect, I don't think it's good enough.

I'd love to re-do it, and given time I reckon I could do it well. However it's time I don't have, and I'd rather focus on having one fuckawesome track on there than split my efforts and end up with two mediocre ones.

I'm proud of what I achieved, but in retrospect, I know I could do so much better. I'm not satisfied with putting work on a compilation, when I know it hasn't been done to the best of my ability.

(Dave, if you want I'll combine and paraphrase these posts, then PM you them so you can use 'em as a statement on the TDL page)

Yeah TDL hasn't been at the top of m agenda recently for obvious reasons. So much shit happening, both professionally and personally, that I can't keep up. I'm gonna crackdown on it like a bitch though.

Bastard parents got home before I could record the last verse vocals, and I think I might re-do the solo, because something sounds really off about it.
