For me, SRV and the good ol EC are tied for Bluesy tone.
John Petrucci and Satch are my favorite Hi-Gain tones.
And I think Froosh has the best clean tone of all time on Under The Bridge.

I like Paul Gilbert's, Dave Murray's and Glenn Tipton's High gain tone. B.B. King's Blues tone, but I'm not that big on clean tones, I prefer a clean tone that sounds a little harsh, so I just tend to roll down my volume and pick lighter. Overall, Joe Bonamassa...that guy is unbelieveable!

As for high-gain, I'd go with Satch on Strange Beautiful Music, before he got all trebly and faint....I think 'tubular' is how he describes it now

Clean tone has to be SRV on 'Tin Pan Alley' from Couldn't Stand The Weather.

Honourable mention: Eric Clapton in the Cream era

Clapton has a real nice bassy creamy overdrive. (Cream 2005 reunion, Disraeli Gears)
SRV has a smooth bassy clean sound with lots of clean gain. (El Mocambo, Couldn't Stand the Weather)
David Gilmour has the godly sustain. (PULSE, Dark Side of the Moon)
Rory Gallagher has a distinctive but great tone with his AC30 and the Treb Booster. (Irish Tour, Live in France)

i admire their tone. seriously.

Gilmour has that sustain these days because he uses EMG SA pickups.

SRV's blues tone's always been amazing. Must be those heavy strings. Oh, and I'm playing the El Mocambo tomorrow :D !

Anyway, I'm a bass player, and I've always been partial to Jaco Pastorius' tone. For guitar, I'm going to have to say Jimmy Page's slide tone on The Rain Song has always given me goosebumps.

Brian May's overdrive tone is what I aspire to.

But then you can't forget the tone of Thin Lizzy and Led Zep, and also T.Rex.

Cleans? I don't use 'em much, but my favourite clean tone is Froosh.

Well I just love the "Claptone" (obviously!!) but I also like Peter Green's and BB King's warm Gibsony blues tones as well, though SRVs and Hendrix's Strat sounds are something I'll aspire to whenever I have the money for a Fender...
