The UG chat is a good place for off topic discussion. It's usually completely dead, but there are a few good people to talk to.

In The Library, should there be a thread established that would enable users to post "On The Spot" poems/lyrics they have written, much like the FreePost thread in S&L. If you feel that the thread in the actual UG forum is enough, then disregard this, but I think that would be a helpful way to post ideas, and gain insight from fellow users and broaden your writing horizons.

This will do nothing but cause disruption, and no good will come from it. I know there are plenty of "spam" groups around here on UG, and if you PM me, I'll be happy to search and find the "best spam" groups we have.

Thanks, Brandon.

We'd like to avoid duplicating things that already exist on the UG Forums.   But if we can find a way to do something similar in a way that adds something special that doesn't happen on the forums, it makes sense to do that.

I have several posts on the free post thread and its predecessor, the lyric game.  It's light, lively, and spontaneously creative.  If we can find a wrinkle on that concept which makes it unique and different, it would be a good addition.  Any thoughts on that part of it?

Ahh. I'll have to think on that. I'm not sure how much we can wrinkle "spontaneous creativity" so it would differ from that of the FreePost thread, but I like the idea.

I'll think tonight at work some ideas that are different but still interesting. Wish me luck..

Well if we could perhaps outline the defining features of the FreePost thread, then maybe alter a few of them to suit our own purposes?

It's a good idea, but we don't want to copy what's already been done. Let's do things our own way with it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would really enjoy it.

This thread is for writing/scribbling thoughts or lines or ideas etc etc.
Good Rule, not much idea for changing here.

All original material.
Likewise as above.

Posts can be as small as one line that you think is awesome. Let's limit it to about 8 lines though (give or take, use some sense). Anything longer is long enough to be posted.
No need in limiting us in posts. I would say all lyric/poems submitted should be OTS writing.

If you'd like to comment on someone's post, PMs work wonders.
I don't think this should stick. I wouldn't have a problem with critiquing in the thread.

No double posting. Share the love and let others have a go.
I'd say it should be a free for all post. If you'd like to post double, go ahead. If you have creative juice running, yayay.

The only thing we might need to change, in order to make this a unique feature, is the first point.
Although I'm shooting for a "Free Post" feel, it can't mimic the thread, and I think eliminating those last three points doesn't do an adequate enough of a job. Tweak what I've posted.

All did was post the rules, as Colohue had suggested.

Perhaps we could organise this so that it's not merely for poetry, but for any sort of blog. It could include checking people's research, suggesting differences in font, layout and colour as well as giving suggestions for content. It could provide the same service both for poetry and songwriting. If you don't have a length limit then you can include any piece of writing, not just poetry. Consider perhaps if I'm having a few problems with one of my Disbelief addition blogs - I could have it checked to see where I'm going wrong.

Right on. I like that idea, and it will also pertain to the Writing bit the port is trying to get at.

Like if you want to be able to post a blog, but not have it just be a huge wall of text, it can be a place where one could get insight on how to organize a post so that it's easier to read. I don't know, haha.

That's good. Layout is important, especially on blogs because you want them to be eye-catching. Good work Brandon. You should take this idea over to the writing section. You'll definitely have mine and syk's backing for it. That's good. Layout is important, especially on blogs because you want them to be eye-catching. Good work Brandon. I like the idea. I'll get around to implementing it when I'm done with some other things. Though it may not be up until tomorrow.

EDIT: Got finished with everything more quickly than I thought.
Here it is: http://groups.ultimate-guitar.com/ugbg/forum/59084 /
Does anything need to be changed or fixed?

You want a forum to spam without being banned?
Go here:

First of all, the suggestions you're making aren't about the UG Railroad or anything that has to do with the Community Page, but about the forums and the chat. So they're in the wrong place here.

But to assess them anyway:
- You want to turn this into 4chan 2.0? A forum just for spam would only be filled with gore and sex, just like on /b/. Go there if you like that.
- Chat does work. If it doesn't work for you, post in Site Feedback, the programmers will help you out there.

For a new destination, there could be a school.

It could be a place where people post questions related to school, if they need help with homework, or another school related question.

couple ideas-

some sort of UG calendar.
it would be a huge list of important dates for UG- dates of deadlines for entries for multiple contests throughout ALL of UG.

then we could work in the Gallery to find a photo for each month.
it wouldnt have to represent the month it's for, seeing as that may take quite a while for planning and organizing... just a good looking picture.

and maybe a couple mods could be used to add and remove dates when needed.

and another one-

a video interview of a UGer maybe? try to get all the forums involved, searching for a certain UGer to be interviewed once a month, using User picked questions.
we could choose from the UG Top 100 list, and other nominations. (of course they can decline if they want).

just a couple thoughts. not sure how the last would really tie in with the Station except maybe the interview being one of those "exciting events" or that person having a month longnspot on the community page ( which is actually pretty unnecessary though haha)

just thinking out loud here.

I think this could be useful. I might not use it all that much myself, but i would certainly try to help out. The only flaws that i can see with it would be first of all, the difference in the education systems across the world. Different systems and levels go into different depths on subjects, meaing someone asking could be left with too much or too little on the situation

Also, i know most people here, will be here to try and help, so giving wrong answers on purpose shouldnt be a problem, but perhaps it would be a nice idea to implement a "who to listen to" thread, that would list all the subjects and a few people who have an expertise in the area and are generally good at helping out and explaining.

one of my favorite places on ug is the community pages, the "blogs" to be spacific. i love to read about peoples day, ideas, hopes, gripes, dreams, jokes, feelings, and even blogs that are sometimes nothing but pure nonsense, etc..

but more often than not, the blog area is filled up with poetery, and lyrics. now poetery, and lyrics are fine and dandy. but if you think about it, (even if they are written about ones own personal experiences), they dont quite qualify as "blogs", imho. and the real estate, in the blog area, is quite limited. and there is nothing more disharteneng, than opening up the blog area, and seeing poem after poem, and lyric after lyric etc.. cause you know there going to be up there for a while. and all those poems and lyrics, basicly do nothing but eat up "real" blog space. lets face it, with real blogs you can interact with them. with poems and lyrics, other than saying "ooo nice", or "gee, that sucked", a readers interaction with them is extreemly limited.

cant there be a section in the community pages, designated just for poems and lyrics? take a look at the Users Home Page, under the User menue, there is an option for blogs. cant there be a seperate option for "Poems and Lyrics"?

Not a bad idea, but I don't think it would work well in a group environment.  Not as much traffic down here.  People needing help with homework need help FAST most of the time.  There are threads in the Pit for that.  The Pit gets lots of reads / quick replies.

Could be kinda hard to do.  You'd need to get video recording capabilities to the UGer in question, and the interviewer and interviewee would not likely be in the same place.  Hard to work the logistics on something like that.  :(
UG calendar...
I'm liking this one, mikko.  Lots of different possibilities on how it could work.  Maybe I'll make a discussion thread in the Subway Station with a link to it from the About.

Post a thread about this, back at the "Batcave".

cant there be a section in the community pages, designated just for poems and lyrics? take a look at the Users Home Page, under the User menue, there is an option for blogs. cant there be a seperate option for "Poems and Lyrics"?
Probably more segregation and structure than is needed.  People are gonna have differing opinions on how many featured blogs should be lyrics/poems, how many political essays, how many self-help informative, how many humour, etc.  We strive for variety.  We can't make it perfect for each and every UGer's tastes.  Just a little something for everyone.  ;)

perhaps for the people of the week, we could have one slot dedicated to profile of the weeks, for everyone with modified profiles?
Killian, if you look at the archives, the first week was only modified profiles.  Then we went to featuring users based on contributions to various parts of UG.

I DO like the idea of having one slot for outstanding profile modifications.  But it might be a hard sell, because we've already lost some slots to "Exciting Events" and the promo picture for the Subway Station.  Maybe we can scale down the promo a bit smaller and gain a slot back and use it for that.  idk.

I think you should be able to add existing tabs, lessons, collumns and so on, to some kind of favortes page. You know, like on youtube. I think you should be able to add existing tabs, lessons, collumns and so on, to some kind of favortes page. You know, like on youtube.

Hmm, thinking about it now again, i can see a lot of flaws with the idea. For starters, not many people have their profile modded, either through not wanting to, or not knowing it can be done. Also, while people get noticed a lot more frequently on the forums, a modded profile would be a little more difficult to come across.

There is a feature to favourite tabs. When looking at the tab, simply click add tab to favourites. The it will be saved to your favourites section on your profile. However, at present there isnt one for lessons or columns etc. This is the second question i have seen today about it though, so i have gone and possted about it over in site suggestions

This place should hold some event or contest or game that gets the community members a little more involved. Get UGers to mingle with different types of UGers.

Also, I think an actual interactive webpage dealing with this aspect of the community would do some good, not just group pages.

Is there a possibility of a "Collaboration Page"? UG users could post songs that they want to record and other users could respond to their request and help them out with the song. Just saw the new widgits. Like the idea. Can you guys add one that will notify me when people comment on my profile? Not the Community Updates one, which tells me what other people are doing; I'm talking about activity on my profile specifically. Or, maybe you could do a little bar on the bottom like Facebook does that tells you when people comment on your stuff, so you could see it when you're browsing the forums or reading an article instead of having to go back to the main page all the time. couple ideas-

some sort of UG calendar.
it would be a huge list of important dates for UG- dates of deadlines for entries for multiple contests throughout ALL of UG.

then we could work in the Gallery to find a photo for each month.
it wouldnt have to represent the month it's for, seeing as that may take quite a while for planning and organizing... just a good looking picture.

and maybe a couple mods could be used to add and remove dates when needed.

and another one-

a video interview of a UGer maybe? try to get all the forums involved, searching for a certain UGer to be interviewed once a month, using User picked questions.
we could choose from the UG Top 100 list, and other nominations. (of course they can decline if they want).

just a couple thoughts. not sure how the last would really tie in with the Station except maybe the interview being one of those "exciting events" or that person having a month longnspot on the community page ( which is actually pretty unnecessary though haha)

just thinking out loud here.
good idea

in the search box you should be able to enter the band and song name at the same time because sometimes you go through like 15 pages before you find what you want. in the search box you should be able to enter the band and song name at the same time because sometimes you go through like 15 pages before you find what you want.

That's contrary to the targets we're trying to hit.  We don't want to present things as a 'popularity contest' based on number of fans.

If the reason a band has lots of fans is because they have friends from the forums or something like that, we really aren't interested in featuring them.

But if they have lots of fans because their mp3s sound great, we definitely wanna feature them.

The problem is:  Number of fans doesn't tell you which of the above is true.

Yeah, I agree.

Here's the problem.  Meebo has its own programming and our guys have just embedded it into UG.  I talked with Andrew or Dmitry about this during beta-testing.  (don't recall which one of them)  The response was:  maybe this will be possible to add later.  Right now, it can't be done.
