Caol Ila is a beauty - now sold in supermarkets (UK) for the first time. A 'real' whisky for sure, cost about 30.

Eagle Rare. Best affordable bourbon out there right now. Go get a bottle now.

VAT 69 is a rather mild whiskey. Doesn't leave much aftertaste but the initial taste is pretty good.
Especially at that price. Bought a litre for 12€ in Barcelona

I'm currently going through Vat 69, it's pretty good actually. Real Scotch in Australia is expensive, so this one will have to do for me now.

I've been trying to find that ever since it was mentioned in Band of Brothers.

Anyone familiar with the Loch Lomond whisky?
I was just looking for a whisky at a reasonable price. Not too bad actually

Just joined, and I have to say, I rather enjoy a JD over ice in a glass. As for scottish malts, scapa flow is heavenly.

Old No. 7 is the way to go! Unless your short on money, then go for Jim Beam ("The poor man's Jack Daniels"-Slash)

I've only tried some obscure old scottish single malt that my parents have (bloody tasty) and jack daniels (not so good...)
any recommendations for a good whisky to buy?

Try as many as you can from different areas around Scotland, I'd recommend Lagavulin, Glenfiddich, Talisker and Macallan to start off with.
